There were some similarities in this match to the one against the Bays last week. An error riddled display by Westies with a late surge but ultimately a frustrating result. Centrals were not as committed as the Bays but did enough to win and only their bad kicking made the scoreline look respectable. Their skills however, were far superior to Westies, they combined much better as a team, went inside 50 twenty times more than us and we struggled on the large ground.
Centrals started without both Gowans and we were missing Ferguson, Silvester and Hartlett with Kurt Thompson coming in for his first game this year. Schmidt didn't play despite being dropped from the Crows.
Q by Q scores: 1Q CD 5.4, WA 2.2, 2Q Cd 8.8, WA 4.3, 3Q CD 9.12, WA 6.4, final CD 13.13, WA 10.4.
Best for West were Piasente with 32 possessions, Webb with 4 goals, Pettigrew, N Caruso battled hard all day and Bricknell and Fisher. Bennett kicked 2.3.
Our midfielders were well beaten again. Ezard got plenty of touches but few were effective. Birss is overdue in repaying the support he has been provided over the past 12 months and needs to step up. R Blesing was quiet and may have been injured early as he spent time on the bench. F Caruso ran into some form and kicked his first goal for the year. The backs were under pressure all day and racked up the stats handballing backwards and kicking the ball to the opposition. Most of the game was played in their patch and so they had to work hard.
The 1stQ seemed 'how far Centrals' as we were comprehensively beaten to the ball and only 2 gls from R Bennett kept us in the game. Bricknell was moved from Schell and replaced by Webb. In the 2nd Pettigrew became Schell's 3rd opponent, Webb went forward and there were more moves than a blue movie. Power listed Scott Harding did some good things. The 3rd produced some of the most boring and uninspiring footy of the game and spectators were dozing off confused by some mystifying umpiring and lacklustre defensive efforts - only 3 goals in total scored. Westies came out firing in the last Q. Goals to Davies in the 2nd min, Pettigrew in the 4th when Callinan was penalised for handballing the ball thru for a pt and Webb in the 6th had us 8 pts behind the reigning premiers. Fisher (182cm) spent much of this Q on Schell (192) in a glaring mismatch. Centrals steadied and added 3 goals to run out easy 27pt winners against an outclassed Bloods side. You won't win too many games kicking ten goals and we need to develop more scoring potential. Webb may be part of the answer but we need more from our midfielders. Birss, Ezard, F Caruso, Schmidt and Davies have kicked only 7 of our 36 gls this year.
The 2s won 13.5 to 7.8

Pretty happy with the Dogs performance yesterday, while it wasnt totally polished there was alot to like again with a few of our younger blokes. Thought Hynes was great once he went onto Bennett after Bennett had kicked two easy goals through sheer strength on Spurr.

Habel was really good again kicked one goal and set up another two through creative handballs, with Boyds injury Habel will continue to cement his spot in the side.

Henderson continues to improve every week and by the end of the year imho will become one of the best key forwards in the comp if not a regular with the cows.

The most impressive aspect for me was Centrals had 3 players (Dutschke, Schell and Cochrane) in the side who had played a total of 2 quarters football this season before today. Loved the way they stood up as well when challenged by West early in the final term.

Agree with everything you have said whufc, might loose Henderson to the cows soon as a lot of there talls have gone down injured. Also thought Hardy had a good game in ressies so if he and Haser come into the backlines that will release Havelberg to go forward add the grunt of the Gowans into the midfield, all looks promising.

Also thought Callinan was back to his brilliant best.

Ricky Henderson certainly gets better with each game he plays...

Is very athletic including a great natural leap from his basketball background...

Pretty impressive rise from him considering prior to being picked up by the Crows he had only played half a dozen B grade Ballarat Football League games with some mates...

If he is going to get a game with the Crows, he'd need to be elevated to Adelaide's senior list as he is still only a rookie. For this to happen, Adelaide needs to put on of their full listed players onto the long term injury list, which I think needs to be 6 week minimum injury.

Chris Schmidt from West was elevated for Brad Moran I think and of course Schmidt made his debut for the Crows today. Not sure of the severity of the Adelaide injuries out of the loss to Melbourne today but that may open the door for Hendo's promotion to the senior list.

I think NFC has pointed this out before, but very suprising to see Henderson slip to 9th in the SANFL mini draft last year where he was picked up by the Doggies...

Yeah the Dogs have done brilliantly over the years in the mini draft especially considering most times we are only picking from one or two blokes. Hendo probably slipped down the order due to his lack of football experience. Players we have had include
-B.Guerra
-R.Williams
-R.Henderson
-J.Griffin

I think Schmidt was upgraded for Martin, so Henderson can get upgraded for Moran.

Yes, I think that's right bloods, plus Andy Otten is gone for the year with his knee reconstruction, so Henderson is every chance to be elevated I would think...

Although Ricky Henderson certainly is a very exciting AFL prospect for the Crows, Phil Davis was pretty good for North today so he'd be every chance to make his AFL debut for the Crows next week, ahead of a Henderson promotion to the senior list...

I have to agree with Paul Thomas, who said on 5RPH Thursday night, that Ian Callinan is in career best shape fitness wise and if he continues the form he's shown so far, would have to be one of the favourites for the Magarey Medal.

Has West massive forst round 1 win against North made the rest of the season tougher for them.
I very much doubt they will be catching any teams of their guard due to how impressive there first up win was.

Sounds stupid doesn't it but could a massive win ever be your disadvantage?

Got to remember that West have been beaten by the two of the top three teams from last year by only 4 goals and were right in the game still in the last quarter. Really need to get their defenders Silverstor,Hartlett and Ferg back on the park together.

Though I think it's improved since his performance against Port, I think Ricky has to improve his second efforts. He should follow the lead of Schelly in this regard. This is one part of his game that is really letting him down, in my opinion.

P.S I've seen enough doggy games pre 2000, to be nervous when Westies got within eight points.

Yeah i was certainly nervous when West got within 8 points.

Interestingly Central had 5 players in their side who have played less than 15 SANFL league games

-Henderson
-Hynes
-Habel
-Duncan
-Nash

i was more worried about the line bet of -22.5 points on central than losing the game.
