Care to name them?

I can't think of any comp's that have enforced byes because of an uneven amount of teams.

It might not be due to an uneven amount of teams but I know that teams in the EPL and NFL have weeks off.
I think college football might too.
The NRL did prior to the Gold Coast entering.
The AFL has had many times and will again when the Gold Coast enter.
The Super 14s has in the past and will again soon when Melbourne come in possibly (not sure if there's more teams planned).

I agree its not ideal, I hate it but its not exactly unique.
I really do miss the fluidity that we used to have prior to 1991.

I am aware of the ones named. Just can't think of any due to uneven amount of teams.

Yeah I know but Dutchy mentioned nothing about uneven teams and you asked him to name them before making a seperate point about uneven teams.
Most major competitions in the world are soccer comps and they have a relegation/promotion system which ensures there isn't a bye in the top competition.
They have natural breaks for international events, etc.
Bit hard to compare to sports like Basketball but we've had byes in the NBL which is more like a footy schedule unlike the NBA which is all over the shop due to road trips, etc.
Other comps that have not got that luxury have had byes all the time throughout history but usually try to get to a point where they have an even amount of teams but then usually artificially enforce a bye of some sort but only once or twice a season.
The only comp you could compare us to is the WAFL and they have a bye (I think).

It's all the SANFL's fault.

I dont see it as being this big of an issue. As Coverking mentioned, it gives the team a chance to freshen up mid year,I admit if you are on a winning streak it can be disruptive but on the flip side a week off after a series of losses can just break the run and get you back on track.

nearly all of the US Sports are divided into divisions of 5 teams, on top of that NFL have byes. If we didnt have byes Im sure we would have a mid season break like the AFL therefore its only 2 weeks a year our teams are affected.

Getting the comp to an even number of teams to eliminate the bye could never be the reason for making a 10th team, it would be doomed from the start

Agree Booney. It should be remembered that these guys are working full time and probably training more than ever in the SANFL comp. At the same time they have young families that demand and require attention and family and friends also. They need a break part way through the year. To complain about the bye just seems to a selfish, petty and socially miopic pursuit.

I think the bye gives the players an occasional rest/recovery opportunity in a long season. From players point of view I think it is a good thing.

its funny how you get used to things, initially hated the byes but now its a great to have a chance to have a break etc and gives your team an opportunity to regroup etc. I just think that how the byes are scheduled can be very puzzling. I could be wrong but I am sure last year there was a team that had 2 byes before some teams even had 1

College football depends on conference does have byes. Texas Tech has 2 byes this coming season. Most sides will have 1 or 2 byes a season
