It was like watching a Harry Potter movie.......invisibility Cloke....

Cameron Cloke:

7 kicks
5 handballs
6 marks
2 tackles
11 hit outs
3 clearances
2 inside 50's
3 goals 1

Not too bad in my opinion, has a big imposing frame but drifted too much in and out of the game

This bloke is huge. You dont really notice how big guys are but when you see him against the average sanfl player there is a big difference.
He is going to be a great focal point for the magpies, who really impressed me last night.

I thought the Maggies were good and given another 5 minutes could have pinched it. They were quick and showed generally good skills. The tackling was also good. A spirited bunch of kids having a crack . Cloke will worry the hell out of most teams, dont worry about that. The crowd was a bit dissappointing, but there were a healthy horde of Maggies supporters on the outer side. As for UK fan who said their supporters were terrible, I forgot that all those Doggies supporters were a bunch of choirboys.

You are a deadset L-) with nothing good to say about anything, or anyone!

So the 2 Centrals supporters who openly commented to me about the masses of Black & White either weren't at the same game or don't know what they're talking about.

And so what if there is Port Adelaide Power gear. What, no Crows colours anywhere? Probably not in your small mind.

Very impressed with the Magpies there young kids played well, but dogs just know how to win.
Impressed with young Habel and Hynes considering the talent to come back in these youngsters are going to give us good depth.

Also agree with the comments about Cloke he is a big unit and even stands out when standing in the Port huddle at Qtr time, but thought Buckets more than held his own and was the most dominant ruckman on the ground. How much trouble will we be in if he goes down injured.

Thought the boys never gave up even with only one on the bench for the last Qtr after loosing M Westoff and Jimmy due to injurys.

THERE IS NO WAY THE MAGPIES WILL WIN THE SPOON ON THAT EFFORT!!

Pretty happy the Dogs got a win first up, especially considering we have the bye and will get some crucial players baack for Round 3. Habel was great in his league debut, amazing a player like Chad O'Sullivan is injured and then another bloke steps up to take his oppurtunity, hopefully he can play consistent league footy all year.

Love watching "Buckets" lumber around reading the play. Very much the Peter Carey of the 21st Century.

Based on the U18 result, (100 Point loss) I think you've got some work to do on your juniors though?

Must say as well Port were impressive showed lots of heart and hardness (excluding Lokan) and on that performance i don't thinkt they will earn the wooden spoon.

Good sign for Centrals is these players are still to come into the 21
-C.Gowans
-D.Schell
-R.Cochrane
-S.Dutschke
-J.Boyd

Their juniors haven't performed at all at underage level for several years.

birdman, I was pleasantly suprised with how well he played, very good in the full back position...

Showed discipline to spoli from behind and laid some very strong tackles, a good first up performance and great effort from the Smithfield lad considering he was dropped from the reserves side a couple of times back to the U18's last season...

Even Daniel Schell commented on LifeFM's call of the game that he was really impressed with Damian's league debut...

Thanks for that he played Under 18s at Lockleys in 2007 and was a huge part in the premiership glory. He's a super kid and hopefully he continues to improve and get a regular spot

In another post, someone asked if the standard of SANFL had dropped. Partly in response to this, I thought the standard on Saturday night was excellent. There was a couple of dropped marks by both sides but also some exceptional grabs.
I thought the ball movement was extremely fast, not the hold onto the ball and only kick to a loose man AFL style. There was a number of good contested marks.
I thought the endeavour shown by both sides was "class" also. I think there was about four, kicking in dangers (or whatever the rule now is) due to players desperately diving on the ball.
Overall a good crowd, good supporter numbers from both clubs. I think Port have a bit to look forward to, they had some good passages of play. Besides some of their finishing in front of goal, their skills were pretty good.

Again, had to admire buckets. I thought his performance was fantastic against two afl experienced ruckmen, providing many clearances. As BeenReal observed very reminiscent of Carey or Redden.

I thought Buckets first half was outstanding but i actually thought Miklejohn in the second half had the better of him. Central were just a little cleaner when going forward at times which was probably the difference in the end.
Disappointed with the loss, but Port can definately take some positives out of the game.

Spot on there SIT. Per my post at half time McKenzie was tearing us apart in the first half, but our ruckmen responded well in the 2nd half and got on top.

That was my first live game of SANFL footy for a few years, due to a stint OS and I have to say, what a brilliant spectacle the game has become. The AFL has nothing on SANFL footy. Both sides were great to watch. Good skills, good hard contests, fast flowing footy and most of all, it was footy the way footy should be played.

After a frenetic 1st quarter in which I felt honours were relatively even, Port had their chances at the begining of the 2nd quarter. We moved the ball forward really well and Mercer provided a target up forward. Port had probably 5 gettable shots at goal, which from memory resulted in 4 behinds and 1 OOF. Not good enough at this level and you just knew we were going to pay for it. Sure enough, Centrals made the most of their opportunities going forward and held a good lead going into the main break. I thought Port's main wekness in the first half was transferring the ball from the half back line into the forward line. We seemed to break down accross the middle of the park, largely due to the pressure put on us by Centrals.

I don't know what Bamford said to the players at half time, but it worked! Port's 3rd quarter was like the Port Adelaide of old. Good, quick movement into the forward line. Stacks of forward pressure and some good finishing to get us right back in the game. In particular, Mercer, Summerton, Cloke and Harder stepped up in the 3rd quarter and helped us fight our way back into the contest.

The feeling was good at 3q time, with lots of positive body language at the Port huddle and at the beginning of the 4th quarter, it just seemed like Port could come back and nick it. Once again, some costly skill errors crept in and Centrals made us pay each time by mopping up, transferring quickly through the midfield and hitting a target up forward, where Ian Callinan was invariably there to mark and convert.

The umpires lost the plot for a few minutes there in the 4th quarter. The 2 x 25m penalties given to Port must have been for Central players mouthing off, because there didn't seem to be any other indescretion. But the Centrals 25m penalty shortly after up forward was ridiculous umpiring. But those effectively evened each other out and the better side won on the night.

I can't help think what might have been, had Port kicked straight. But I was proud as punch at the way Port went about it. We had a lot of first gamers and a lot of young blokes in the side. But our agression at the ball and tackling, our follow up efforts and defensive pressure in our forward line was absolutely brilliant. If we can maintain that sort of effort for the entire season, we'll give most sides a run for their money. And most of all, us supporters will leave happy and proud every week.

I thought Port's better players were Mercer, Lindsay (agree with the above comments that if he continues to play like he did on Sat night, he'll be playing AFL next year - what a star!!!), Harder (my new favourite player - no way he's only 76kg as the budget says. He's hard as nails!!!), Summerton and Kirkwood.

Well played by the Dogs though. It's hard to see them not making the GF again.

Paper today says "hip" injury, not knee as I noticed you've listed in your injury thread.
