VENUE CHANGE FOR TRIAL MATCH

At the request of the AFL, the trial matches between Central District and Woodville-West Torrens, originally scheduled to take place at Hamra Homes Oval this Friday (March 5), have been shifted.

A combined League and Reserves trial match of six 20-minute quarters will now be played at Thebarton Oval on Friday, March 5, from 5.30pm.

The venue change ensures the ground conditions at Hamra Homes Oval will meet AFL standard for the NAB Challenge match between Adelaide and Melbourne this Saturday (March 6).

Unless of course the game is at the Dome, then it's anything goes.

Considering the condition Traegar Park was in (IMO that game should have been abandoned consideing it was only a NAB Challenge game), and the Etihad Stadium fiasco, I can understand the AFL wanting grounds AFL sides play on to be in good condition. With forecasts of up to 20mm of rain early in the week, I can understand the AFL not wanting the ground to be a mudbowl.

With up to 10 000 expected at the game (according to http://leader-messenger.whereilive.com. ... elizabeth/) and the potential catering profits from the game, if it means the Centrals v Eagles trial match gets shifted so bit - the long term benefits far outweight this extremely little pain.

The AFL have also moved the Brisbane v Geelong game to Visy Park due to rain making Southport unplayable (looks like they've learned from the Alice Springs farce)
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I'm not too fussed it is at Thebby now, love waching footy there, plus it's closer to home for me also. It just means I wont be having a meal at Grand Central beforehand now...

OK, I've calmed down now.

Was really looking forward to some Friday night footy, at least I save some petrol.

It's just the premise that led to the change that has me befuddled.

So be it.

Unless, like PhilH mentions, it is in an agreement, what a bunch of arrogant f*ckwits.
How about when they play 3 games a weekend at the same ground during winter?

Why doesn't Dimwit take the issue up with God - how dare he have the temerity to even think about brewing up some rain. Only problem is, if someone suggested this, he'd be found talking to a mirror.

And I would not be surprised to see 7/8th of bugger all precipitation leading up to that time.

Closer to work and home so all good for me

6 Quarters .... sounds like something I would have answered in a grade 1 maths test!

How is the ground looking ATM dogs fans?? It was a bit ordinary when we were out there the second time last year but we have had a few spits of rain and plenty of sun since then. Wonder how many AFL guys would have played on a muddy ground in the last 3 or 4 years...certainaly doesnt happen like it did in the old days!
Trust the process.

Brilliant......I work about three minutes from Thebby BUT now have a work from home arrangement for Fridays....was looking forward to footy returning but can't be stuffed travelling down there......so thankyou to those precious wankers at the AFL....the next time someone gets their foot stuck in a grass join at Etihad and wrecks their knee I'll just smile somewhat smugly.....

Not very happy at all, me and most of mates finish work around 3-4 on friday, were planning on celebrating the first bit of REAL football this season with a bbq and drinks at my house before heading to the game which wasn't due to start until 8. Now im left with lots of meat and a carton of beer. Then had a friends birthday party at a pub within walking distance of the ground which was our destination after the game.     While annoying i understand that at times the football world is a tad bigger than myself and my mates plans

The worst part about all this is that the game now goes from being the first trial match to a meaningless 6 quarters combined league and reserves, these games are generally glorified training runs where matchups are so mismatched with star league players getting stood by blokes who probably won't play a reserves game all year and visa versa. I hope Lairdy now rests every potential league player and just uses reserves and under 18's to fill the spots.

The reasoning is absoulutley ridiculous as well. Most people would have seen the state of the Etihad stadium after the acca dacca concert, as well as the ground in Alice Springs last week. To be perfectly honest at this time of the year the ground would be of alot better standard if it does get some rain on the oval.

My hatred for the AFL grows as each day passes.

Whufc, Why don't you and your mates have the BBQ outside Thebby and then take the carton inside Thebby to watch the game, it's not like they can throw you out for having an esky at the game as it is only a trial.

not sure mate Centrals weren't going to allow alcohol to be brought into the ground, they were having a beer van set up, biggest problem is to now have a bbq will be a massive rush to get down there in time. Plus we would need a designated driver now.

Someone should tell the afl that a little bit of mud won't actually kill the players, sanfl players manage to cope with it on a weekly basis.

yeah i rang the club on monday and asked about taking an esky with alcohol into the ground for the trial and they said nope, it might be only for night trial games because there was a night trial against North a couple of years ago where we had two cartons of beer loaded in two eskys to which the security said we couldn't drink it in the ground. We stood outside drank as much as we could as quick as we could, I ended the night with the nickname which has stuck since 'beerdrop ben'

It's just the arrogance of the AFL that pi$$es me off. The rain forecasted is no more than the friggin sprinklers would be providing. As previous posts have mentioned, the conditions in Alice & at the Docklands have been much worse than Elizabeth would have been after a couple of games on the Friday night.

Yeah agree thats whats p****s me off the most is the arrogance from the AFL, obviously Central will lose a little bit of coin from moving the trial game because people would have gone into the clubrooms, bought food outside and so forth, BUT the AFL game is bringing more coin to the table so they have more power.

My biggest gripe now is that this trial game goes from being the first important hit out to a nothing all in scratch match.
