Backwell clashes with Tigers over NTFL finals
GOING NOWHERE: Glenelg is refusing to let Brett Backwell return to Darwin to play NTFL finals.
GLENELG is at loggerheads with midfielder Brett Backwell over his desire to play finals in the Northern Territory Football League.
Backwell, 29, has been playing for Waratahs in the NTFL this season and wants to return to Darwin to play in the club’s qualifying final on February 20.
But the Tigers are refusing to allow Backwell to return, insisting he stay in Adelaide to focus on preparing for the upcoming SANFL season.
Glenelg football operations manager Ken Applegarth said he was meeting with Backwell to discuss the situation on Monday.
``At the moment he won’t be going back up there,’’ he said.
``His obligations are with us. If he wasn’t contracted he could do what he liked but he’s got a one-year contract with us.
``It’s an important part of the year with trials coming up so we want him here.’’
Backwell has played four games for Waratahs this season and has been named in the club’s best players in every game, including two best-on-ground performances.
It is Backwell’s second stint in the NTFL, he previously played for Waratahs in the 2002-03 season.
Waratahs currently sits in fifth position on the NTFL ladder, which has a top five finals system.

I dont understand how Chris Hall could come onboard late one year... another can quit and go Kayaking for a bit and decide he doesnt like it and wants back in once we made finals(Dan Kirk).... another bloke can go treking for 6 months and waltz back in just pre finals(Sam Rudolph)... yet a bloke who's only crime was to be playing a FOOTBALL FINAL rather than be on a club camp gets the chop....
I would have thought showing commitment and loyalty to your side was actually quite a valuable trait.
Im exceptionally disappointed that Mouse was placed in the position where he had to make a choice. The bloke was a shining light through our dark years. Mentored many a junior and was a terrific leader on the field. He was and is much loved by members. I would have thought for all his service that the club could actually cut him some slack. They cut him back to a one year reduce deal and he was allowed to go....
Its hypocritical considering decisions made by the GFC over recent years in similar cases.
I am very much hopeful this situation can be resolved as I truly believe Mouse deserved much much better.

I agree re standards and "culture" etc... I agree that a level of professionalism has to be set... but for years Ive been howled down that this is SANFL footy. Blokes have real jobs... have lives outside of football and that SANFL footy doesnt pay the mortgage. I have been told for years that its "different courses for different horses" in regards to how much training is done, how many times a bloke has to go to gym, if a bloke has to attend rehab and how much of the pre season a bloke has to do. I always argued that there should be a standard and that standard should never be compromised.
Listen to players though they made me very aware that with jobs ranging from Lawyers to Tradies that they cant make some sessions... they cant be there sometimes on time... they sometimes have to miss matches (Ben Moore so he wouldnt get injured just before his fire service physical exams, Lucas Block went to Perth for work last year). Why is this one match (where he aint exactly just sitting on his **** doing nothing) going to draw to a close the best player the GFC has recruited in the last 10 years. I saw him close up when he was injured. Doing everything he could to get over the line and convince the physios he could contribute. He's played with injuries other blokes wouldnt have even considered playing with.
I cant help but think there is WAY more to it than just mouse training all week at the GFC and flying up for a final.... it cant be that petty.
