MIDFIELDER Mitchell Grigg is set to become Norwood’s youngest ever League player when he debuts against Central District this Saturday.
Grigg, 16, started the season in the Redlegs’ under-16 side, winning a premiership, before progressing to the under-18s.
He has played the past two games in the Reserves, impressing against Port and North, to earn his spot in the seniors.
Norwood football operations manager Mark Ross said the club had checked its records and believed Grigg was its youngest ever debutant.
``Craigy (Neil Craig) was really young but he was 17,’’ Ross said.
Still two years away from being eligible for the AFL draft, Ross said the club hoped Grigg would be a permanent member of its side for the next two seasons.
``Hopefully we’ll see a lot of him in that time.’’
Grigg is also a member of the state under-16 side and will play in the national championships decider before the AFL grand final at the end of the month.
I doubt Norwood have thought about this very well.
I like pushing up kids to see how they go, however Centrals are renowned for targeting the young kids in other teams.
The kid is going to cop it mentally and physically and it could set him back 12 months in his development. The positives that can come out of this are negligible compared to the damage. They would be better of giving him a taste in next years pre-season.
