They don't of course, BUT it's something I've been calling for the last 2 season, I even started a poll on here from memory...

I think with all "Team of the Year / Decade etc" there seems to be a common occurance that 4 get selected on the bench so one more bloke gets picked.

The SANFL surely has to look at 4 in the bench for next season, it seems like common sense to me, SURELY ???

So why don't they pick another 5 or 6 blokes then. It's pointless whether people want 4 on the bench or not. Currently we have 3 so as he's named last it's bye bye Timmy....

Yes it does, if you just pay them all a little less each doggies4eva ;)

Then you find out who really wants to play for the jumper or just for coin :D

As far as these teams go, I reckon this is pretty well spot on. I would have liked to see Bello in there, again who would drop out? A pretty good side though.

Agree about Bello - he has played in 5 winning GFs - maybe that is better than 1 magarey so Clayton would drop out. Also both O'Sullivan and Callinan have played in 2 winning GFs both very good players. Sorry to be parochial but I know more about doggies players than the opposition.

playing in a gf doesn't necessarily make one a good player.

just ask aaron keating. :)

but callinan is a good player - doesn't have the service level required i'd have thought to make the team

I'm with SJABC the whole decade there has been 3 on the bench so that is the way this elite team should be picked. The all australian team for the AFL didn't have 4 on the bench when people were calling for it to occur.

True but Callinan made the best players in both 2007 and 2008 GFs!

Nearly half (normally 9 of the 21 ) of the selected GF winning side gets named in the best players so that can't be a criteria!

If that is Callinans claim for inclusion then the whole side may as well be Centrals. Come to think of it, they have dominated the whole bloody decade so why not?

Bello, Whiteman, Squire, and dare I suggest Luke Powell would be more worthy on that basis. Interesting there is no Westies players, but surely there were some there from 2000-04 ie five years who contributed to them making the finals in those years?

Spot on mate, and I agree about the Luke Powell being a worthy selection, but once again, as with Bello, Witeman, Squire etc etc, at whos expense in the side is the tough question. On the Westies possible selections, as I mentioned above, Adam Richardson WOULD be a worthy entrant IF the best full forward this decade, Brant Chambers, hadn't played SANFL. Maybe one player from the Bloods that I always admired and was certainly a solid contributor was Ed Richardson, the former skipper.

.

Don't think you could find a spot for Powell in that side, but just thought he is more worthy than some of those who were listed as being unlucky.

In 3 or 4 years , Callinan and O'Sullivan might be worthy but just not enough games IMHO. Same thing for Allan, while I can't see how Brett James gets picked over Simon Arnott. Perhaps they just want to appease the Norwood people and what other Norwood player would come close?

Damian Squire was a fine player, but did he do enough 2000-2009? His Magarey's were in the 90s IIRC. Perhaps just didn't do enough in the required period, despite perhaps being first picked in any 95-05.

No second ruckman is stupid. What SANFL team has been selected with one ruckman? Not sure who it would be though, but I'd suggest Craig Parry has been one of the top ruckmen here for many years. And we only select 3 on the bench for games, so only 3 on the bench for this team. The big regret I have with the dogs team of the first 40 years is the number of players on the bench. All they do it for is to stroke an ego or two. But I think it cheapens the whole concept knowing they tried to squeeze everyone in rather than picking the best ruthlessly.

So this is the team I'd pick

FF: J. Clayton B. Chambers M. Passador
CF: C. Gowans D. Schell J. Cicolella
C: D. Healy (c) J. Sheedy S. Arnott
HB: H. Hopwood P. Sherwood P. Thomas
FB: B. Nelson C. Ah Chee T. Hay
R: P. Lindsay J. Gowans B. Backwell
Int: C. Parry T. Weatherald M. McKenzie

Obviously a lot of dogs players, being biased as I am but playing in all GFs and winning 7 I don't see much argument against that.

Completely forgot about Bello (and there will probably be more). Bello a definite in. I'd have Squire and Bello in for James and Weatherald.

Squire to Healy's wing, McKenzie to James' back pocket and Bello and Healy on the interchange bench.

Also think Passador is lucky to be in the side. Would consider moving Schell to Full Forward, Chambers to the pocket and Alleway to CHF.

I think Schell has been the best Full Forward this decade.

Yep, wrongly put. Chambers has the best record as Full Forward this decade, but I'd pick Schell ahead of Chambers at Full Forward in my team.

Fair enough. Definitely Chambers for me. My only query is (as I stated earlier) Passador being in ahead of Hargraves.
