This was not the West team you lost to.

Not sure where that lot got to but they certainly didn't turn up in Waikerie.

Our mental prep for this game was very poorly planned and while the players need to take responsiblity for their inept attempt, the coaching staff need to learn a lesson from this as well.

We didn't even travel as a team

Only 10 players went up in the bus, the rest found their own way up there either friday night or sat morning.

After warm ups Norman went back into the room to breif the players, Collins stayed on the truck and watched the kick and catch on the oval.

We played a local in the league team which meant that either Greg Rowe, Scott Bricknell or Kirt Thompson (all players who are hard at it) missed a game where our softness and lack of attack on the ball made us an embarrasing team to watch.

We did this in a game that has been planned for a long time to promote our club in our strongest recruiting zone (outside of Vic   ) and embarrassed ourselves.

Our attack on the ball was nothing like it has been this season. If we had attacked the ball with the ferocity we have in recent weeks we would have earned the respect of the locals, win loose or draw.

With no pressure from our mid field our defence had no chance to hold the dominant forwards of Sturt. The pin point accuracy of Sturts kicking was a joy to watch, especially if you were a Sturt fan, and gave our defenders no chance to spoiling.

No best players for West Adelaide only best triers

Good efforts yesterday from Morris, Fischer, Willits, Lobbe and Pettigrew. No where near enough to be competetive against a true top 3 team.

The 'local' surely must have some talent?? Westies wouldn't give up a spot in their 22 for promotional value .... or would they . How did he play and will he be there next week?

U/18's

West 11.9 (75)
Sturt 10.11 (71)

West kicked a goal after the siren to win the game. Sturt kicked 9 goals in the first but only 1 on the next 3 quarters.

Had about 4 touches and dropped two sitters in the third quarter.

About the same standard as half the team on Sat.

Spent way too much time with his back to the play, usually running forward, but not much point when you are not watching the ball.

This lad obviously had some talent given he had previously made the state country side, and i think had played one or two league games in the past with West. Certainly shows the big gap between country and SANFL footy though.

Great game to listen to. Really enjoyed the call by the LIFE FM crew. Especially the extra details of the atmosphere surrounding the country game re: media build up and the feeling out in the crowd, around the oval etc. As an overseas listener, I tend to value the extra hints of Australiana that the rest of you would all take for granted. The call of the game itself was of course (possibly because of the result) also very entertaining.

Just to add to other's thoughts on this game, I had the image that Westies had tried pretty hard for most of the match. Examples are the way they finished off the first quarter; a solo effort to spoil a Sturt run by a West player, who provided a second and third effort to get the ball on to team mates and eventually resulted in what was the best goal of the quarter by the sounds. West then kicked the first goal of the second quarter, and it sounded as though there were a few instances of individual brilliance that were threatening to get Westies fired up. Cupido's massive goals being in that category and up to that point the tackling by both sides was said to be fierce. I'd make the score as 5 goals to 3 and West certainly were in the hunt.

The next bounce saw Sturt going sideways, slightly backwards, just maintaining possession, and turned it over as soon as they went forward, West's pressure in evidence. About this time I was getting worried as a string of West names were rattled off as they pushed the ball up into their forward 50 and then..... Coad! Apparently his direct opponent did everything just about right but Coad seems to be an extra ace up the sleeve that can just thwart attacks like that.

From that point on West lost momentum, one of their players in defence (Langdon??) gave a couple or more free kicks away that resulted in goals and created a nice buffer. But I think that if Coad had not been where he was then the scores may have clicked over to 5 to 4 with Westies having kicked the last 3 with all the momentum and the Blues having to come up with something to stop that run. Instead we had a purple patch (had a few this game) of goal after goal and suddenly it's almost a ten goal game.

In the third quarter Sturt had more scoring chances, and the radio said they were the better side although West outscored them. It seemed that they were showing a bit of fight with the breeze in the third, and I have seen sides come back from similar positions, so even as late as the beginning of the final quarter I had not written off West who required about 8 goals to make up the deficit.

Fortunately it was Sturt that got 7 goals in the last with the first score for the quarter being a point to West. This turned out to be their only score for the quarter, and could esaily have been a goal. Perhaps West threw in the towel at that stage because from that point on it was Sturt party time with the breeze. They said it was the largest score by anyone this year and the largest margin. Anyway, my take on the game was that West did fight it out for three quarters, but were let down at key times so never actually threatened Sturt and the enormity of the task finally cracked their backs in the last.

Listening on the radio is obviously relying on other people's interpretations. The facts then get mixed in with my own imagination and interpretations of what's being said, but the above was my version of the game. I guess it is very different to what others have written, but if anybody could be bothered reading all of this and then replying to any of it I'd be interested in what your thoughts are.

Cheers Jimmy. :D

Sounds as though you need a walkman mate. I record every game that gets broadcast these days. I have no hope of listening to SANFL live on Saturdays, but the recorded version is still a good substitute.

I have posted some big pic galleries of the match http://www.sturtcheersquad.com/apps/pho ... id=6462505 and of the presentations afterwards http://www.sturtcheersquad.com/apps/pho ... id=6462479
All pics should be of interest to Sturt supporters as well as West supporters, especially at the presentations. I tried to get around the whole room and take shots of everyone there so you could get a feel of what sort of night it was.
Very weel done by the Waikerie FC 8)

No probs Thiele, you can link away my friend.
I tried to get alot of West supporters in the pics to show what a great atmosphere it was having both supporters in one club.
Really enjoyed it.

Serious question bosvit did the selection of Bennett upset the team dynamic at Westies as it seemed a most unlike westies effort for 2009.

How widely was this discussed at the club it did seem a bit odd for Collins to announce this six days prior to when most sides select their teams and prior to arguably Westies best win of the year?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
