A lot of Crows fans come down from the country or have other commitments Sat afternoons (incl to SANFL games) so they prefer Sat night or Sunday.

That is right Hondo, which makes his last line:

And there’s little conflict: those involved elsewhere are only a slim chance to show up for the big show at the best of times.

another example of the uninformed garbage in this article

At least 50% of footy fans in this state follow both SANFL and AFL yet they must feel at times as though they are being coerced into choosing one camp or the other with "you're with us or you're against us" talk coming from both sides. Successful footy in this state = strong SANFL and strong local AFL teams crunching out the revenue from AAMI Stadium.

I don't have the answers to bridging the divide however I am sure that Sat afternoon AFL is not one of them and that the article Phil has quoted does not help at all.

I do agree with you here Hondo. South Australian supporters really should have the best of both worlds, a great football life that only WA could hope to replicate.

What a shocking article by an obviously ill-informed "journalist". Great work Phil for pointing out the crap in his article in a well constructed manner, very good reading and some great points you make.

It's a great response Phil, however on this site it is preaching to the converted. That response needs to be read by the greater football public and in that lies the problem. How to get Phil's response in the mainstream media when our own SANFL administrators fail to respond to articles like Jaspers rubbish and when any adverse news comes from the 2 AFL teams the SANFL comp somehow becomes the whipping boy.

The AFL could hand out free beer at Footy Park, I still wouldn't go. I love SANFL league footy, and I couldn't care less about the two corporate teams we have in SA or their cousins across the border. In an ideal world I would like to see Crows and Port finish 15th and 16th every year. Great response to an insulting article to a great league.

SANFL is mainly about sport.

AFL is mainly about entertainment.

The major revenue streams for AFL are from TV. They get their money from advertsing and advertsers will pay more when more people watch (and also directly sponsor teams if they get media exposure).

So the scheduling of games will be determined by viewer numbers not by crowd size. Hence more night games and less Saturday afternoon games.

And when you are paying your main entertainers (AFL players) big bikkies you have to protect that investment by minimising the risk of injury - hence make the game "softer".
We used to be good :-(

JAS wrote:Interesting stuff...don't follow AFL myself but if it's just Port that are 'bleeding' then how can it be down to the day of the week the games are on. Surely if that was the problem then the Crows would be 'bleeding' just as much too. Seems a rather flimsy excuse.

Regards
JAS

Their supporters on other forums constantly blame the timing of their games as a reason for their lower crowds. I've asked what time suits them but have never gotten an answer.

Perhaps its time for Port Power to promote their club, have some kind of membership drive instead of blaming everyone else.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I don't know Bayman, we had a chat today.

He said he wasn't too keen to come on if I was looking to pick a fight over the article, I said too late for that and suggested he click onto this thread.

He left his mobile and was happy for me to ring it at approx 7.05am tomorrow. Assuming he has read this willl he answer ???

Find out tomorrow! If you can't listen live, it will be podcast on the SANFL Web site www.sanfl.com.au from mid morning.

There's no need to pick a fight with him just chuck him a few facts and watch him dig himself into an ever deepening hole....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Great article there (EDIT) Phil H. A very satisfying read.
One thing I'd like to add is the statement in the opening lines that "SA needs to grow up and have Saturday football", is an annoying thing to read.
Copying Melbourne without any reason that lays beyond guesswork is more a juvenile action than whatever SA as a whole represents, and I am tired of reading opinions that deride SA's image as a cause for whatever situation people wish to associate it with. SA is what it is, and the 4 million odd people that call Melbourne their home will make decisions based on what's best for their own city. I don't think they have really taken the time to decide what's best for Adelaide, so copying them purely as a solution in itself doesn't make sense.

 I think you may be right! Sorry Phil H!
I think I'd better go back and fix that.
I keep forgetting that there's two of them and tend to roll them together into one huge monolithic South Australian footy celebrity.
