MMM today they were jumping to the surface brother.
Must admit this is the time of the year we can all stand and beat our own chests.
Silly season(centrals losing to west and eagles stopping the last two games) is over bring on round 1
And round one between two teams that begin the year slowly .

Thats a myth my friends that we start slowly our Round 1 results have been fairly decent in recent years.
2000- Sturt (WIN)
2001- Norwood (loss)
2002- North (WIN)
2003- ?
2004-?
2005-?
2006- Sturt (WIN)
2007- North Adelaide (WIN)
2008- Port Adelaide (WIN)

I cant remember the results of those three years (SPELLY) but we have won our last 3 first round games.

You are right though our record over the first 5 games of each season would not be so impressive, give me some time and ill see if i can come up with the stats (or just hope Spelly does it).

Apart from the one season where we won our first ten games the rest would be around 50/50. I do recall us losing a few round 2 games in a few seasons and be sitting 1 win and 1 loss. but Round 1 is not our problem.

Funny how stats make things look so different to what we recall. My thinking is while we might not play our best footy in the first 3 months of the season we certainly get enough wins. You don't finish top 3 year after year without winning games in the first 10 rounds.

Anyway, dogs a class ahead of the eagles these days IMO and so in what everyone will call a "lacklustre" performance by the dogs and a "promising" game for the eagles the dogs will still win by 5-6 goals. I also tip our round 1 line up to look similar to:

M. Westhoff Havelberg Slade
Gowans Lawry Callinan
Switala O'Sullivan O'Hara
Thomas Schell Sansbury
Cochrane Sibenaler Hayes

Griffin Symes Dutchske
McKenzie Jenner Goodrem

Just off the top of my head without knowing what guys might be under injury clouds or whether anyone else is burning at the moment. Most new players I expect to start in reserves but might force their way in if they play well. And no doubt I've forgotten someone but all those blokes would be very unlucky to not be selected. And I am thinking Griffin and Symes will play for us and not Adelaide obviously. But with Giles in the mix he's replace Griffin and then perhaps Leigh Westhoff or a Lee Spurr/Louis Hadden if Symes isn't there.

Would be surprised to see Schell front up GrahamL - he hasnt been sighted in the Trials & word is he is a month away. Can't see Roy risking O'Sullivan either, given he only played a half of the Reserves last Saturday.
The big question is whether we can fit Griffin, Giles & Buckets in the same side if all available?
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Agree with Hazydog here Graham...

I've heard Schelly weont play until Anzac Day while Sully might be best having a full run in the 2's this week after only the half in the reserves trial last week. Also, we wont see Richie Cochrane for another month at least, he has a hamstring issue and Trent Goodrem may be in doubt after hurting his ankle in the trial against Sturt on the weekend.

Intersting you have no room in the side for new recruit Justin Hardy. He has been one of our best players in all 3 trials this year and in my opinion, would have to be one of the first blokes picked for the league side. Oh, and yeah, just out of curiosity which Gowans twin is it you have playing on the half forward flank ? Regardless of which one it is, you have the other one playing in the reserves by the looks of it as I can't see another Gowans anywhere in your line up ???

Knew I'd forget someone. Yes, I'd find room for another Gowans. I'd find room for 3 Gowans brothers if I could!

Had absolutely no idea who might be injured so did the best I could on what I knew so apologies for that.

As for Hardy I couldn't push him past Schell or Sibenaler as a defender if both were available. Given what those blokes have done I wouldn't put someone else in ahead of them without seeing them in a premiership season game. But certainly from what I hear he'd be in if Schell was out. Even more so if Hayes misses as well.

A good sign is our depth seems to be growing again. Was a little thinner than I'd like a couple of seasons ago.

Would be curious to see what you'd think our "full strength side" would be if (even though it never happens) we regain all players and lose none. Round 23 and winding towards finals and which 21 does your crystal ball envisage running out onto the field? Personally I can see a couple of hard decisions being made in that case. Switala has been near the cusp IMHO for a couple of seasons. He just doesn't demand that spot in my eyes. And at what point do we tap the Gowans or Slade on the shoulder? They won't be able to play this level forever, but do they have a spot for the season regardless of whether they're in the best 22? Griffin, Giles and MacKenzie won't all fit and while buckets has been tremendous these last couple of years if Griffin and Giles are both available and Giles improves as the Power are expecting could they force the big fella out?

Yes Ash Duncan quality young person and very good footballer to boot, will be his debut if selected, personally i think he is almost a certainty to play.

I didn't know Goodrem was injured so they might try and get half a game of the bench out of O'Sullivan, other wise i think they will select one of Habel, Barmby or Alloca
