Only good question on this thread. I guess you would have to say balance sheet which puts my club at risk. Can't see it being allowed to happen by any club though.
All supporters come to the party when the cash is needed.

In a recession it should be based on who has the most supporters on welfare.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Sturt & South should merge to be come the Southern Blues
Adjoining zones, similar colours, sturt need a decent home ground, south have a good one.
Theyd probably go alright

South had their opportunity to merge in the 1980's and the members voted against it and instead set the club on its current course where along with Central District they are one of the most financially viable clubs in the SANFL. Clubs merge because usually both of them have significant financial problems which at the current stage is Sturt and West to the worst case. Westies however have significant assetts which with the current restructure at the club should see them trade out of it.

Maybe Sturt should merge with the Eagles and make the home base of the club Thebarton.....

Well this is just going to go round in circles. No one wants to see their club merge so what are the other options. I can't think of any myself other than bringing a tenth team in from the south-east, murray or the ports (lincoln, pirie etc.).
If it came down to supporters bailing their club out of financial trouble, i can't see which club wouldn't manage it as has been done in the past.
This tit for tat stuff(you said my team should merge so i'm going to say your team should merge) is pretty pointless.

Look it just ain't going to happen (a merger or a club folding) - not in the short term anyways.

The honour board would be just a mass of honour and pride when they read that between them they have a massive 7 premierships and 38 wooden spoons between them in the last 89 years.

It looks even better if you go back to 1900 with a total of 7 premierships and 43 spoons but we wouldn't want the proud, proud club of the merged Glenelg clubs history to look even more tarnished by including pre 1920.

just stirring south and bays fans

I said "was".
At the time Port were given the second licence I was still in Adelaide and I think there were enough football supporters around, who had not committed themselves to the Crows, to support another independent AFL team. Giving Port the second licence left those supporters nowhere to go unless they lined up with the Crows, because no one but a Port Adelaide supporter was going to line up with Port as their primary AFL team... ;)

Once they started talking up their "long history of success" and re-identiying with the SANFL Magpies of the past they, predictably, lost some of those

I don't think more than 8 SANFL teams is sustainable in the present market, and I think a merger should be encouraged - and if Norwood were one of the teams to do so I'd live with it.

i couldnt aggree with you more...
