The thing about "Tank" as a sobriquet for Ron, is although it was a favourite amongst Norwood supporters, Ron actually hated being called Tank. "Bones" is the only nickname he would answer to.

His "partner in crime" was Kingsley "Big Bill" Wedding.

Another Norwood name I can think of is John "Two-Eight" Wynne. There must be plenty more, but I can't think any more until it cools down :)

Old West players - Clarrie "Bang Bang" Cannon.

"Melbourne" Jack Richardson.

More recently:

"Guidance"
"Piddler"
"Pride"
"Baldrick"
"Smeagol"

My favourite was Scott "Guidance" Loving. Always great when he had the footy and a host of teammates were shouting for the ball.

Not sure about the nickname origin of most of these players (sorry devil)

Wilfred Wilson - "Wilbur"
John Duckworth - "Whatsa" or "Ducky"
Steven Lally - "Sheep"
Peter Vivian - "Milky". Always thought it was because he was a milkman at one time, might be wrong.
Rene van Dommelle - "Beans"
William Hurn - "Bunger"
David Saywell - "Sally". Probably his thin, "Long Tall" build and the Little Richard song
John Wyley - "Spog"
Scott Lee - "Tater"
Russell Shields - "Donkey" (apparently)

Been around a while and remember most of them playing. Perhaps a more "mature" 'Dogs fan could shed some light on their nickname origins. Centurion?

Glenn Sandford was called "Big Guy".

It sounds quite straight forward but I believe the story goes that when Sandford went to North Adelaide, one of the younger players (apparently Luke Holland), called him "big guy" in one of the drills and it just stuck. If you knew what Luke Holland was like it makes the story funnier.

Not sure of most of them, but I know "Bunger" is inherited. Every male member of the Hurn family through the generations is known as "Bunger". Where it started, I don't know.

And I've always thought Vivian was named Milky because of his alabaster skin. I seriously cannot recall a footballer with whiter skin. Maybe Casper (the ghost) may have been a good name for him. But you may be right, perhaps he was actually a milky at one time.

Correct on Milky AH, it was all about the skin. Any white it was see-through.

Tater is a shortening of "Agitator", reflecting his football style.

I did know the story behind "Beans" after sitting with him at the ANZAC luncheon at Adelaide Oval but can't recall it at the moment. Will come back to that if I do remember, but it was very funny from what little memory I have of the day.

I think Centrals already had a Caspar (Muir) at about or just before the time Milky came along.
