Why is he a terrible pick up UK? IMHO the kid can really play and will be a very good hbf or bp player who has all the time in the world when he has the ball and has silky smooth skills. I think he could fill the role massie has played for the crows.

I personally rate Ohara Jacobs Martin Pfeiffer Williams and Sharples alot higher than Schmidt.

Lets just say I wasnt surprised when Schmidt's contract was not extended with the lions.

Can anyone tell me if Chris Schmidt will automatically be returned to Westies?

So you should, CP :D

Bad luck for Norwood with Ben Speight, but Cockshell wasn't rookied.

He had already committed to westies prior to being rookie listed so he will not be apart of the mini draft.

Have you ever seen Schmidt play? O Hara and Sharples are certainly not better footballers than him atm.

Whilst I reckon Speighty will develop into a useful footballer, he's not a huge loss by virtue of the fact he hadn't really played a lot of league for us (although IMHO he would have for sure in future years).

Cockshell will be interesting now as I don't think our club would have budgeted for him, and there's strong interest in him from a rival SANFL club, as well you would know RaB ;)

IMHO given our lack of size, he becomes pretty pivotal to our 2009 squad, will be interesting to see what unfolds.

Yep. I thought he was overrated as a junior. No doubting he could easily prove me wrong. We will just have to wait and see.

I certainly hope that interest is from us at the Bloods as we are in desperate need of a ruckman IMO and De Jongh won't make the grade so Cockshell will be a very usefull addition to our squad fingers crossed.

Schmidt is an absolute beauty of a talent, he WILL make it. Awesome pick up by the AFC, a dead set steal.

As per the press release
West have just released this update as to some, hopefully not all, of the recruits for 2009.

NEW ARRIVALS

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Shane Birss and his partner Amy Nelson to the West
Adelaide Football Club. Shane played AFL football for the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda
playing 71 games in total.

Other recent signings include Robert DeJongh (Norwood), Tom Langford (Tasmania VFL)
Fortunato Caruso (Coburg) and Chris Schmidt who we are very pleased to have returning to the
club after two years at the Brisbane Lions
. Ryan Willits has also signed on to remain at
West Adelaide following his AFL delisting.

Wade Champion, Daniel Harris and Bradyn Fisher have also returned to the training track and
are doing well. Members will see many new faces in 2009 and we encourage you to come down to
training to see how the boys are progressing – then enjoy a meal in the VENUE afterwards!!
Training is Monday / Wednesday / Friday (6pm) and Saturday morning (8:30am) and will
conclude on the 20th of December. Training will recommence on Monday the 12th of January.

Welcome to the new players and welcome back to some of the returning players hopefully they form part of a more successful west adelaide in 2009

I've never met the lad Dutchy, so I can only guess that he has a reasonable head on his shoulders, as his decision making looked pretty good to me.

Reasonable foot and hand skills as you would imagine, and reasonable pace (not blistering) ... Can win his own share of the ball but I was also impressed with the way he was put onto Wicks vs Sturt at the Parade in a run-with role for the final quarter late in the year ... Wicks was traditionally a bloke who used to get away from us and cause us problems but Speighty outran him several times and stuck right with him.

Some of the Norwood posters here would undoubtedly have seen him at junior levels so might be better getting their thoughts?

Adelaide Crows will go down in history for drafting the worse player of all time !
Ricky Henderson is a fine basketballer from Ballarat and plays footy for Trentham in a shit bush league 60 ks out of town.
He got picked up because of his height and jumping ability alone.
The team that gets him in the mini draft will be spueing.
Will never ever play AFL footy. Will be lucky to get a kick in the SANFL reserves.
I had to check the calender to see if it was April fools day !
What a joke, and someone actually gets paid to pick these blokes out.
Dumbfounded. :o  :?

I thougth the selection of Henderson was a very curious one too! You've obviously seen him play, what position did he play for Trentham? Did he stand out at all (from your comments i presume you'll say no).
