Yeah, but as long as sponsors are putting up the $$$...

American Football get away with it.

Easy when you've got FOX, NBC and ABC fighting for the TV rights....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

One of the few assets that the club currently has, is its guernsey.
It is instantly recognisable as belonging to the safc. The current guernsey is not a hybrid of a vfl/afl club such as Glenelg ,West and Norwood's jumpers. The issue is to be discussed at a members information evening on Wednesday night. The jumper can only change with a majority vote of members at an AGM. The constitution also states that the club jumper must be blueandwhite with a majority being navy blue. I feel that the board have far more pressing issues to deal with than re-badging the club.

For fear of being labelled sour grapes here are my thoughts.

As a rule over the whole league I believe that those clubs that have jumpers that clash should have a clash jumper.

That's why I personally don't like Sturt and North having an away strip, their traditional jumper does not clash, why change?

However the South Navy Blue has clashes with Norwood, and to a certain point West & Glenelg.

Wearing the option 3 in away games at Norwood, Richmond and the Bay would make sense.

South could make an argument that as they have worn the same colours since 1876 (longest streak in the SANFL), then they could be like Collingwood or the Amateur League ie we were here first, you work around us.

I suspect Port Magpies will NEVER have an alternate jumper for that same reason.

As for changing the home jumper I am not so sure of ditching the SA on the front.
What is interesting is that the logo portrayed is a NEW VERSION of the new logo.

Ie suddenly the Panther is larger than the lettering, unlike the design of 3 years back.

A final thought;

- the ultimate success of the Panthers besides being a consistent winner will occur when they are fully accepted as the team of the southern community, something I beleive there are still a long way short of.

- In my opionion all decisions on how the club is branded & promoted should be around two factors, will it help bring on field success, and will it help the club be embraced by the southern community?

I will leave it at that.

I'll leave it at that.

as do all American sports, both Pro and College

I quite like the 3rd as a clash only, but Ill pass on the rest, when have SA worn stripes before? :?

The majority of Souths premierships with actually worn in a Geelong like gurnsey (except Blue was thicker, white thinner).

In 2007 the club wore a herritage jumper of its first strip in 1877 when South won the inaugural SA Football premiership

I reckon the first one would be the way to go. I've always disliked South's traditional guernsey so I reckon a change would be good.

Huh? Navy with a white lettering motif....gee where have I seen that before?

Norwood's guernsey is as much of a hybrids of Melbournes as South Adelaide's is of Carltons.

As an aside, The Pash Papers show South players training in their Geelong style guernsey of teh 50s.

Rather conicedental, not that long ago I asked Adelaide Hawk when they wore it - 1956 to 1959.

I am a traditionalist and I like the current South jumper because it looks like a football jumper.
Maybe as a second strip the one predominantly white would be OK....but get rid of that bloody panther !

blueandwhite....the Norwood jumper is not a hybrid of anyone's, we have worn that or similar for most of our history !
Apart from a brief time under Alan Kiligrew...God bless him....when we wore the Melbourne jumper and a time under Hayden Bunton when we removed the red collar.

To me a jumper has history and tradition and should not be changed repeatedly....like the AFL. Try getting Port Adelaide to change their's !!!!

Absolutley cannot stand the idea of the club changing the guernsey unless its to make the slight alteration back to make it the very same as it was in the 1970's without the S looping around the A.

Naturally I will be voting no to the idea!

If South wish to have an alternative guernsey then go use our Heritage Guernsey is my suggestion. In the 30+ years that I have supported the club we have achived little in the way of a positive result, the one thing though that South does have that no other club has is that we as a club are the oldest club in the SANFL. South are the last of the clubs that founded the SAFA and we as a club should be entitled to emphasise that history as a part of who we are. To openly reject the history of the club in order to suggest that to do so will release the club from its losing streak is ridiculous and insulting at the least.

Its great that Geelong are a successfull AFL club, yet we are our own club with our own history and the thought of being "Patched Over" by a another club makes me feel sick.

Hopefully the members stick together and not only vote out the idea but at the same time vote out the current board of the club who appear to me to be a lot more of a problem than the currrent guernsey of the club......

Well I don't think they look bad at all; Like Wedgie says, get rid of the pooncey panther and they'd be fine.

But then I reckon the current South jumper is fine. I might add some white piping to it to balance the colour, but otherwise the current South guernsey beats any of the alternative designs.

I don't mind the jumper designs themselves BUT...

It's that bloody new Pather logo that spoils it, it's a shocker...

It kind of looks like a weird catfish with a retarded body, just doesn't look right to me...

If South want an alternative strip, I reckon they should just do the same as Carlton do. Swap the blue and white over...

I actually like the "traditional" South jumper and think a predominant white background with the navy SAFC and numbers would look pretty good. Just wouldn't be able to wear it against Centrals in their "alternative" strip, that would be a bit of a shocker !!!

AND PLEASE GO BACK TO THE OLD PANTHER LOGO THEY HAD !!!

Cheers,

BP

NAFC have had success replicating membership badges of past eras (eg they hypothetically use the 1959 badge in 2009 to recognise 50 years since that badge). In all seriousness if they want to review the guernsey, why not go back to 1964, your last flag, and recognise the history that team created in the South guernsey and seek to replicate that?

Anyone got a picture of the SAFC guernsey in 1964? Next year marks 45 years since that time so perhaps the goal could be to not go 50 years (to 2014) without winning a flag? That gives the club 4 full years to win a GF, for the club and for the guernsey that last brought you success!

The club could get the 1964 premiership players on and number 10 that year could sit down with number 10 this year, and 1964 no 10 could have his name on inside of the gurnsey. It could become a kind of buddy/mentor programme to drive the club.
