i actually thought you had more sense than that ah, the footy of today is as good if not even better than it was pre crows, it is only the teams up the top that is different to then (barring glenelg & north in the last couple of years)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

ahh yes,.... and they're long gone now. 13 straight losses in finals I think. I think they've only recently got to a 50/50 win/loss ratio in finals

ahh yes .... and remember when Sturt held up the rest of the competition for eight years straight in the 90's. The Dogs lost two flags and the Blues won eight spoons. They too recovered

Past is past

Roll on 2009

SANFL is superior to any other state based competition, and does your comment refer to the 11 flags Norwood won prior to 1900 in a competition with as few as four teams in it. and as few as three teams recognisable today.

I'm jealous of teams like Norwood with such an extensive history, but don't denigrate the competition just because the Redlegs have been off the mark for a few years.

And what do you mean dinkum competition. Are you saying clubs, teams and players today aren't fair dinkum, aren't training or playing as hard or harder than previous generations.

The average SANFL player these days would be more skillful than in days gone by. Of course the best players go AwFuL and very few SANFL players if any today could compete with the likes of Robran or Bagshaw skillwise , but they could probably run their legs off.

These are the times we live in. Make the most of them.

I absolutely agree with this. To me, comparing Port's flag in 99 (not getting into the whole PAMFC/Port Adelaide pre 1991 debate), was probably only half (or even less) as satisfying as a premiership won before 1991.

Its all to do with the fact that the SANFL is no longer the number 1 standard football comp in the state (not taking into account that SANFL is arguably more watchable than the AFL), and the fact that the majority of the elite SA born footballers were all playing in the SANFL pre 1991, which certainly isn't the case today.

There was also none of this rubbish with players playing when dropped from another comp (ie the AFL), and subsequently qualifying for finals after playing 3 games. Pre 91 all players in the competition were fully committed SANFL players, with the goal of winning games/premiership with their SANFL club, not playing well to impress their AFL club.

I am aware it was an exception, just had to post it anyway.

And I still disagree with your point. If it is so easy, why don't more clubs win flags?

I don't think i said it was easy. Its just how i look at things personally, and i don't necessarily expect others to agree, as everyone will look at things from their own perspective.

Back in the old footysa days I used to trott out 'the old chestnut' but after seven flags, come on...it's time to give the Dogs the credit they deserve. I don't think it is any coincidence either that most people who are playing down the significance of Central's performance this decade barrack for Norwood and Port. The reality is it is up to our clubs to bridge the gap, just as it was up to Central to do the same when Port were dominating ten years ago.

Personally I think that the pursuit of excellence and premierships has done wonderful things for the standard of SANFL footy. I can remember watching the blues having their tilt at the 1998 flag and for much of the season I felt the skill level from all teamms I saw was fairly poor compared to the pre AFL days. Having seem all teams play this year I think back to how far the comp has come in those 10 years. Sure some clubs still struggle with skills and decision making against the tougher sides but that is to be expected.

Sure, as I drive past the chimeny and see the centrals tri-colour, I despair. But, rather than make any attempt to belittle their achievemnent, I'd rather aim high to become the new benchmark. To use a Newk saying "They have raised the bar" Well done dogs!

PS CAVEAT DORMIS CANIS as posted by somebody I assume that means beware the sleeping dog or the suchlike. I don't think people (like me) will be so quick to write them off in 2009.

And the problem REB is that Centrals bridged the gap, crossed it and blew the bridge up again!

I think 9 grand finals and 7 premierships is an outstanding achievement in any league, whether it be AFL, SANFL or Under 8's.

Personally, I couldn't care less if the SANFL standard is better, equal to, or worse than it was in previous decades. I wasn't around in the 60's so can't compare, and I've forgotten what it was like in the 80's. To me it just isn't important. I support my team because that's what they are: my team. Whether the sides of today would beat the sides of yesteryear is irrelevant and as far as I can see a pointless discussion. If the Bays had got up last week would I have enjoyed the premiership less than the pre-Crows premierships of the mid 80's? I don't think so.

It's not about comparing teams from other era's but it is about appreciating quality football that crowds will come to see. As evidenced by the crowd at the Bay when Sturt played there. If you witnessed the state game this year you would also see how good the sanfl has become. Not really pointless at all.
