But what a complete and utter shame that the author could only supply examples from VFL history. Really, who gives a toss about some Melbourne reserves player who managed a torpedo punt in a reserves grand final from the 1910's (or whatever). It is a sad state of affairs when those who should be conversant with the game's history are entirely ignorant of what happened outside of Melbourne's city limits.

In recent years David Mitchell was a bloke who regularly kicked the skin off the ball. One of his goals in particular remains in my mind. At Glenelg Oval v North in 2006 he managed a goal at the southern end from about 70 metres out, stuck on the eastern boundary. Would have gone 70 metres up as well as forwards, and easily cleared the outstretched fingertips of the defenders on the goal line.

I thought exactly the same when I read it Pseudo.
The author could've used examples like Keith Kuhlmann, Bomber Clifford and Eddie Fry for starters.

I've got to remember to compile some of the Long Kicking contests held at the Showgrounds during the Royal Show in the 60s and early 70s. There were some big kicks in those contests. Anyone on here who saw these contests?

Yes - I remember in the late 60's seeing the late Bob Shearman and "Diamond" Jim Tilbrook in competition at night on the main arena. I think Tilbrook kicked over 70metres the night I saw him, but I have a recollection that there was some sort of handicap if the kicks were deemed to be wind assisted.

At my first game of SANFL footy I watched Billy Barret kick a drop kick goal from the centre of Alberton Oval.

Have seen Dale Ellis kick a fair distance on a few occasions, especially on training nights when he was at Oval Ave.
Trust the process.

I remember from watching the old Sat night SANFL replays a massive kick by Penttingill from dead centre wing at the Parade that sailed through half post high. They ended the show that night replaying the kick a couple of times.

My Dad saw the game in which Bill Barrot booted the drop kick from the centre at Thebby and he says that was the biggest kick he had ever seen. He also reckons that Kevin Johns was one of the best and longest exponents of the drop kick he had ever seen but he may have been biaised being a Dogs fan!

I remember the Barratt goal at Thebarton but Noell Pettingill is by far the longest kick I have seen.
He won the long kicking contest at the Show around 1974 and they could not measure the distance because they could not find the ball......near a 100 meters.
I saw him take the ball at half back at Football Park and kicked it out of bounds next to the point post.
At Norwood Oval he rang the bells on the Greek church on Beulah Road a few times too.
When he played at Thebarton one year they had to shut the brickworks for fear of damage.
Strangely Robert Oatey wanted to change his kicking style because he thought he could kick further.
He went from Norwood to Sturt when he struggled to get a game and sadly did a knee at Sturt and was finished.
Wore number 16 at Norwood and I think he came from the south East.

Michael Graham.

I saw Michael Graham kick a goal from the wing at the Parade in 1983, one of 7 goals the Blues slammed home in the final 10 minutes to go from trailing by 36 points to 7 point winners.

I also read somewhere about a goal he kicked at Footy Park in 1974, from close on the center circle. The ball moved so much about in the cross-breeze that it was looking like going straight through for a behind, before swinging across the face and splitting the center perfectly.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

The long Billy Barrot goal at Thebby that I remember wasn't a droppy, it was a torp from a very long way out on a very boggy, heavy ground on a filthy day. I have it on tape I think.
I can also remember Shearman and Bob Day each kicking drop kick goals from around the centre of Unley oval.
But Pettingill was the longest kick I can recall.

And in the 70s, long before the current trend, a US grid iron team conducted an Australia-wide long-kicking contest, offering a playing contract in the States to the winner. A Reserves player from Westies, Des Ley, won it. I think he went over there to play but don't know how he went.

IIRC, I saw Ross Gibbs, latch onto a torp from a kick in , hit the centre circle of the Bay on the full, where big Super Carey deftly palmed it down to Tony Symonds who was streaming down the guts, took a bounce...goal !

Gibbsy's kick would've been close to 70+ metres...

LOL I know these stories grow with time, but I think you'll find it was a about a 50m torp from the pocket/flank (right on the SouthWest boundary line).

Cracker of a goal nonetheless and not trying to detract from it, but nowhere near contention for longest kick.

And YES, I have very vivid memories/nightmares of THAT game including THAT goal! :?

2 stick in my mind........
Damon White on the members wing at Adelaide Oval scoring a goal at the Northern end.
Danny Hughes in the state game in '84 I think. Was thrown into the ruck and got a centre square infringment free kick with the man on the mark just our goal side of the centre circle.A massive TORP that was marked by Stephen Kernahan on the top of the goal square. When the ump set the mark he was right on the 10m line.
