SANFL Statement – 2020 Season Postponed

SANFL, in a united decision with the AFL and all other State Leagues, has postponed the 2020 football season in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

SANFL will delay the start of the 2020 SANFL Statewide Super League season, Reserves and U18 Torrens University Cup competitions until May 31.

A review of competitions which have already commenced, including the SANFL Statewide Super Women’s League and U16 Torrens University Cup, is continuing, with a shortened season under consideration. An announcement regarding these competitions will be made shortly.

SANFL remains in discussions with the AFL with regards to the postponement of Community Football leagues and will provide an update as soon as possible.

SANFL CEO Jake Parkinson said the delayed start to the 2020 State League season in South Australia was unavoidable due to concerns for the coronavirus and the need to protect the health and safety of players, coaches, staff, supporters and the broader community.

“This is an unprecedented global health issue which we, like many other organisations, are doing our best to come to grips with and make decisions which are in the best interests of the general public,” Mr Parkinson said.

“The ramifications across all levels of football are monumental and therefore require a united ‘whole of football’ approach to ensure the financial sustainability of our clubs and the future of our national game.”

Mr Parkinson said SANFL will be working through the impact on SANFL Clubs, its members, players, staff, supporters and sponsors over the coming days.

I wonder if those working at the SANFL take a pay cut as they have nothing to do. I still paid for my seasons ticket and digital pass. I don't expect a refund.

Very tough on the players, definitely the longest pre-season ever! I'm expecting some ultra fit players with razor sharp skills come this June.

I’ve waited 33 years to unveil the premiership flag.
A few more weeks won’t hurt.

Gill McLachlan:
We are also working through the idea of supplementary playing lists being available to clubs – players will be able to be selected from any state league across the country – further details to be released in the next week and a time set for a mini-draft.

I can’t see how some SANFL clubs will financially survive this. Players that don’t get “drafted” will have salaries dramatically cut to the point where they might walk away... we might just get that under 23 comp yet..

14 game season , each SANFL club plays each other twice. Port and Crows can play with themselves.

Home and away finishes last week in August.

Finals (top four) in September.

Sounds good to a me.
Why can't the AFL teams reserves just pull out of their respective state leagues.
Instead of raiding state comps for top ups couldn't they just do this.

Except for Central (and North) as we wear white shorts every game (blue away to NA).

Why has the start of the SANFL season been postponed but the start of the AFL season is still going ahead albeit with a reduced schedule?

Perhaps so the AFL can cherry pick uninjured players from the state leagues if teams need to top up their lists due to COVID-19?

That was never an SANFL thing, purely VFL. North, Torrens, Central, South, West and Woodville wore white shorts at home and Port, Sturt, Norwood and Glenelg wore dark shorts at home.
I never understood Westies having white shorts at home.
Whilst we are at it we should also revert to red behind posts. Much more sensible than the white behind posts. I am sure Malcolm Blight would agree. Those with long memories would remember him seemingly running into an open goal, mistaking a white behind post for a goal post and scoring a point.
