The incessant reminders to Port fans that "it's your fault" are so painfully pointless as we are all well and bloody aware of our position and how we got here.

Pointing the finger of blame over and over will solve no problems at all and as most of you continually piss and moan about how the PAFC / PAMFC situation impacts negatively upon the SANFL then perhaps trying to solve the problem as opposed to going around and around and around in bloody circles might be the answer?

Why I continue to visit this thread puzzles me as page after page of dribble has delivered no answers...

I thought at the time they were given $1 million to fund the move? Anyway, that's in the past.

Yep, seems pretty accurate to me. I think we do get it.

After the lions share of the $1M was used to set up Ethelton, where was the rest of the revenue supposed to be generated from?

And Booney, there have been plenty of answers given, BUT, "There are none so blind as those that will not see."

I'd guess, they expected a higher turnover at Alberton (post Power) would result in overall no revenue loss. For example, simplistically if they were making 100% of the Port club turnover pre- Power and that was $300,000, then they agreed to a 30% split expecting $1,000,000 turnover (post Power) they would still be getting $300,000. If this wasn't the case and they were "screwed" by the Power, "their club", well then why go back for seconds?
I never saw the Ethelton set up, must have been okay for $1m?

Well lighting doesn't come cheap for a start.

And I have no doubt that continued success in 97, 98 and 99 probably hid a few sins.

But much like the Australian Cricket Team in the mid '80s, a sudden exodus of experienced players really started to bite when they realised there was no cash in the kitty to either recruit or maintain their junior development programs.

Thank Heaven for the return of Bob Clayton!

It may sound like whinging but I dont really care. Pretty much all the $1 million went on trying to make facilities at Ethelton somewhere near SANFL standard. $1 million doesnt go far when you have to start from scratch. Given the club then had no clubrooms and could only pull 15% from the Port club, is it really any wonder that the club has struggled to make a buck, whilst clubs like Centrals print their own money out of their pokie fortress, when this revenue stream has become so important to SANFL clubs.

Whilst there have definitely been mistakes along the way, its not like the club havent been proactive in trying to turn things around. There was the $2 campaign in what...01/02? which everyone mocked but hey...at least the club recognised the future issue and tried to do somtehing about it. They bought a pub, which unfortunately turned into a disaster whilst most other clubs were making loads of cash.

So its not like the club has been sitting on its hands going woe is me. Theyve been trying for years to turn it around.

I actually reckon that's a pretty fair post Macca, my biggest concern for the Magpies was player spending that in a few instances appears to have been irresponsible over the last decade given the fine line on the clubs financial position ... Obviously the club has addressed that now though.

But other than that, I think you've made some fair points there (and acknowledged some mistakes, kudos for that) .. $1 mil certainly doesn't go far, and I don't think you guys had a lot of options in terms of gaming venues.

I know what it's like when your club is under the pump for $, in our case we still held good $$ in assets that were eventually re-invested into $ generating assets, but I don't think the Magpies have even had that to fall back on (given the debt associated with the POW).

I hope Port can get through this and it's something the footy community can look back on in 10 or 20 years time and view it as not much more than a blip on the radar.

Yeah thats what I was thinking in terms of mistakes. I think they went a bit hard on the big name recruiting for a couple of years when they probably shouldnt have. At the time I think they had just bought the POW so maybe they thought it would be generating a lot more money than what ended up being reality and in the end its put us behind the eight ball even more.

Yep fair call, and it would have to serve as a good lesson learnt .. There's a lot of decisions at most if not all clubs, that they don't get right so Port are no orphans on that one .. Not all decisions are correct ones IMHO, you just hope you get more effect from the better ones.

With the SANFL dictating the AFL based PAFC have no involvement with the SANFL based Magpies, what was the alternative?

Exactly. It was the SANFL clubs who came up with the 85-15% split of revenue from the Port club as they didnt want it to be seen as the Magpies having a leg up on the opposition. It wasnt an agreement made between the PAFC & PAMFC. It was the SANFL and its clubs saying this is how its going to be. The PAMFC had no choice in the matter.

There has been some incorrect information posted on this topic.
The $1.0m was not given to the PAMFC by the SANFL – it was provided by the PAFC and made up of approx $770k to set up the PAMFC and an additional $230k SANFL to AFL player transfer fee. The other SANFL clubs with players in the original Port Adelaide AFL squad also received these payments
The AFL 2nd licence proposal had the Port Club distribution of 80/20, but was altered by the SANFL League delegated to 85/15 – this was later changed back to 80/20 at the instigation of the PAFC.
The delegates also insisted the PAMFC not be allowed to train at Alberton (so Ethelton training facility was established), not allowed to have any administration functions at Alberton (premises had to be rented on Port Road) and PAMFC merchandise could only be sold at Alberton Oval on match days.
Hopefully, One PAFC will correct the above.

Not go ahead and form the Power to go into the AFL if the deal didn't suit? ;)

Is it a case of now "little brother" has a pokie license, "big brother' wants to mend some bridges, at least until they can get that asset?
