Fantastic move by South. He can play but is easily the hardest to get along with player we have had at the club. I know some of the back room boys will not miss him at all. We expect him to be cut by the crows at years end and return to Melbourne.

Glenelg Football Club is pleased to advise that Crow’s listed Shaun McKernan has joined the Club. McKernan comes to Glenelg after the Club was approached by South Adelaide earlier this week.

Following discussions with the Adelaide and South Adelaide Football Clubs, McKernan’s transfer to the Bays will take effect immediately.
Glenelg Football Manager Ken Applegarth said whilst this came out of blue it was an opportunity that required serious consideration. In the end it was very clear that Shaun will add depth to the Club’s big man department. “Shaun will provide an injection of height and strength which will address the immediate needs of our Club whilst our talented group of younger talls continue to develop,” he said.
McKernan will train with Glenelg tonight and is named to play against the Magpies this Saturday.

South Adelaide sought out Glenelg and organized the transfer, the club had a call to make on several issues with our forward structure and where we are heading as a club. I fully support the decision and its a pity that it did not happen at the start of the season, yet I guess the club had to have an opportunity to make it work and they made the call on the transfer instead.

I think a win/win and a goodbye at the end of the season for all clubs involved.
Good move South if he does not fit in.
Good move Bays if he can fill a hole and have a chance to change his attitude.
Good move Crows for seeing the sense of the whole situation. Trade bait anyway.

I think if he stayed at South he would have been given a shot in the Ruck as Wundke and Eddy both looked dangerous in Round 1 or if he was to play forward it would have been in the Reserves.

At the Bays I would imagine he will play deep forward and may have the occasional run in the ruck.

The whole reason he was moved seems odd IMO. The Crows want him as a permanent forward and think South are hampering that by his dule role - Fwd and Rucking but Glenelg can accomodate the Crows request and play him as a fwd only so both clubs happy as are the Crows with the swap. Nice communication etc made the move smooth for all parties (unlike PAFC who just do it to suit their needs including the fact it helps the Magpies!) however still some ???'s remain

How can you develop a player particulary a versatile forward by restricting what position he plays? Surely versatilitiy is key to an AFL career so on that basis McKernan can't or won't be rucked unless of course injuries to other Glenelg players force him to be moved by Massie? Will Glenelg play him in ruck even if to pinch hit if their other rucks are getting badly beaten?

Also isn't his development to get him ready to put pressure on Jenkins and to offer some real competition for that spot? As I read it that is the primary reason but doesn't Jenkins also take the second ruck role when Jacobs has a rest? So on that basis surely McKernan, if he is going to oust or replace Jenkins as CHF or FF, won't he have to also ruck to cover Jacobs?

As SDK said.
Seems like a sensible conclusion for all concerned.
If he's not happy at South no point having him stay there. Let South get on with developing their side.

Tigers desperately need another quality big fella down forward, & he fits the bill perfectly.
Dont worry, he'll get a run in the ruck from time to time.

Best case scenario, he'll kick some bags this season & help us win a final. (yeah...notice I said final not flag)

Personally I think the lad has a huge upside. If he doesn't make it at the Crows, he'll make it somewhere else.

Sounds like Glenelg want to become the crows reserves team.

I trhink the difference is South were using him 50/50 Ruck & Forward and even though he kicked goals against us last year it was when resting forward.

I think the difference is we are happy for him to play 80/20 Forward & Ruck as Button and McGinty will play ruck or we will play Button and Tapp may do a bit and McKernan a bit.

As much as the word permanent forward has been throwen around I don't believe this want him excluded from the ruck all the time as if he makes it to the Crows team he will be doing some ruck work as I can't see Walker, Jenkins and McKernan all playing in the same forward line.

So did Glenelg lose themselves a game by guaranteeing McKernan game time?

What do they do if he keeps under performing?

Sounds like the position he plays at South is exactly the same type of role he will play with the Crows if selected so surely he would be better off staying and developing that part of his game?

Do by permanent they mean every minute because i swear i saw him take the ruck duties from the centre bounce after a Port goal in the third quaerter.

Why the Crows didnt trade him over the last few sasons is beyond me

Other clubs actually thought he might have something but Im sure they all know now that hes a DUD !!!!!!

Do South get any financial gain for off loading him as Im sure the Bays will only have him for 2013.
