Things have to start somewhere... I doubt very much people were talking that way when our league was formed back in the 19th century.

yeah but the trophy is essentially to see who is the 17th best team in AUS what prestige is there in that.

By this logic
Is there prestige in being the 3rd best football club in South Australia ?
ie being the best state league level club in the state (SANFL premiers)

If not
what have all the Central fans been celebrating this past decade??

If so
and THERE IS prestige in being the best state league level club in the state (SANFL premier)
then surely
THERE IS prestige in being the best state league level club in the country (Foxtel cup champion)

Even though saying 'we've proved we're the best state league team in the country' is a decent brag, at the end of the day the comp is being proposed because of money. It's driven by money for Foxtel from one end, and by money for the competing clubs at the other. Amusingly enough, the AFL who I think would have no intuitive interest in this whatever (quite the contrary-- boosting themselves and running down the state leagues has been their business for 2 decades now), and stand to make nothing (or next to nothing) directly from it, are the meat in the sandwich. They are presumably helping out as a goodwill gesture to Foxtel to keep Aussie rules prominent on Foxtel, and encourage them to bid high & bid often for the scraps of the AFL rights that will be available to them in the next TV rights bidding war.

It will cost Foxtel (trusting it's them and not the AFL who will pay; I know it sure as hell won't be the clubs/SANFL or the idea will never see the light of day) pretty substantial money for travel, accommodation, grounds, broadcasting etc. So of course they'll kick some money into the can as the prize for the winners (and probly some smaller amount for runners up etc). The question is, 'How much?'

This is one reason why Centrals are wise to play their hand close to their chest. They still reserve the right to come back and say, 'We'll only play if the winners' cheque is $X', where 'X' is the amount to make it worth their while.

There is prestige, just not enough to take focus away from the prestige of being SANFL premier, without a big bucket full of cash as an added incentive.

I just hope Norwood's decison makers are asking themselves "WWCDFCoPAMD?"

I have stated this before...

1. I think it's a great idea - the EUROPA LEAGUE works well
2. It will NOT work unless the AFL SUPPORTS it - not sure they want to

The AFL is NOT about promoting or helping 'grass roots footy' (i.e. Other Competitions).
They ONLY care about their own competition - look at the ridiculous amounts of money poured into GWS & GC, not to mention that stupid bloody hybrid game we are served up every year!

Let's say it does run & becomes popular.

The AFL will 'scuttle' it ASAP - remember the popularity of 'Australia A' in the One Day Comp 15 odd years ago when the Poms & Zimbabwe were here?

Same thing will happen - the 'overlord' will pull the pin.
How???

The AFL TV Deal - excuse my cynicism 8)

Great Idea - Won't Happen :(

I find it interesting that they like the concept and are willing to juggle their fixtures around to make it happen - providing the costs can be covered and sufficient prize money offered. Not sure about squads of 40 though
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

What do you base that on?

Most thinking sports fans recognise it as a B grade competition, devalued by way too many round robin games and distorted mightily by the fact that group stage losers from a completely different competition, the Champions League, can enter halfway through. The last fact alone is just so flat out bizarre it removes any legitimacy from the comp.

Bring back the knockout UEFA Cup.

Anything that gives any club outside of the AFL a moment in the national sun should be supported IMHO.

Can anyone explain the sentence where the WAFL clubs want to be funded to fly up to 40 players interstate for each game? WTF is going on there?

You'd be looking at up to 25 players, then add coaching staff, trainers, statisticians, and the board.

Thats pretty stupid if the clubs are demanding that.

23 players max, 7 other staff max = 30 tops.
