I don't know anything about Slattery's motives but in the end it was win/win - more money AND the chance to play in a successful side. The problem with this debate is that its very rarely only one reason why a bloke moves. A guy asks for more cash at his existing club and doesn't get it; well you could argue that a subsequent move is based on money but it can equally be argued the move arises because the player believes they're not valued or appreciated... and whilst a player may have a certain level of loyallty to a club, they may not think they're getting loyalty by the club in return... its also a fact that people close to a player don't always share that loyalty.

Hello in 2007, we recruited

1 Jesse Smith (Kangaroo's)
2 Dean Galea (Williamstown)
3 Jackson Barling (Williamstown)
4 Peter Walsh (Pt Power)
5 Michael Hooper (Coburg)

Red & Nickname, the facts are we recruited all of the above that same year, all are no longer playing actively for our club!!!! ALL would have got paid more, than Slatts was on or what he asked for ????, the facts are we make some big mistakes at times and Slatts was a typical example. He isnt the first and wont be the last from any club, but to argue is pointless as we should have done everything in our power to retain him.

As previously stated maybe the reason Slatts left the Bloods should be argued on a West Forum. Im sure if you speak to the player in question as suggested earlier all rumours will be put to rest.

As also previously stated I dont think West have trouble making quality signings. Shane Birss as example again this year, they just dont seem to hang around as long as recruits at the other clubs do. As to why that is, its not my place to speculate. Just as a comparison what West got out of Walsh and Brown. Compared to Mcabe at the dogs. I dont think $$ was the difference.

Back on track. After all this is a thread about Centrals recruits after all. Which I think we will have atleast another 3-4 to annouce before the year starts.

Happy New Year. ;)

The real money is in the AFL and I am thinking that it is harder to develop your skills when you are playing in a losing side every week.

As nickname says, asking for the pay rise at West destroys the argument about moving to better his football and that's the issue I was addressing.

As for never letting the truth get in the way of a good story, thank you, as in this case the truth is that Charles asked for a pay rise at West and after that, decided to move to Central for a payment well above what West could offer. Hardly moving to 'better his football'.

Good luck to him for moving, but I'm entitled to my opinion; an opinion backed up by the facts.

mmm
Charles Slattery asking for pay rise mmmm, he deserved it, he was one of our more consistent players at the time and deserved to go up the scale, the fact is we recruited some real duds from Victoria that would have got paid heaps more than Slatts was getting, the truth is also that his father was having his two bobs worth as well.

But to accuse Centrals on this one is totally unfair as he could have been treated better by us and he proved in a better side how valuable a player he really was until injuries have dented his career a little

Well said Dash!

I don't believe there would be too many players in the SANFL that play for money.
Those players get weeded out pretty quick and get offers from clubs outside of the SANFL.
Most players play to the highest level they can.

Are you suggesting Slattery went to Centrals to improve his chances of being drafted?

Of course, we are assuming that Slattery didn't just ask for more money from West knowing it wouldn't be forthcoming to ease his transition to Centrals. Losing week in week out can grate on anyone eventually and perhaps he decided that to put up with more warranted more cash or just get out.

The funny part of all this is that here is yet another player apparently on mega $$$ at the CDFC. It's a wonder how we afford the cash for it!

When I made my comments I was thinking of the interstate recruits that come to the SANFL with a hope of either playing at the highest level that they can or furthering their skills with a hope of getting an AFL draft. I don't know why Slattery signed with us but I suspect that it wasn't just the $$$s. It is failry rare that we take players from other SANFL clubs.

It was mentioned on the Centrals forum by someone that was in attendance at the recent AGM that Kris Grant was asked by Norm Russell who we had recruited so far and Kris mentioned Eddie Sansnbury, Justin Hardy and Kyle Jenner. So it seems he is officially a Doggies player now, will be a very good recruit I think, even though he has had 12 months out of league football.

If the current INS and OUTS were the final recruitments for the season would you be happy with this?

IMHO we have plenty of depth by doing a mock team not including AFL listed players proves that so if Hardy was up to league standard and Eddie still has his passion for the game i would be satisified but not over the moon.

I did the same after reading this. I think we look strong. But agree we definately need to sign one more key position player. An extra midfielder wouldnt hurt but is not as important IMHO.

F - Dutschke Havelberg Slade
HF-Osullivan Lawry C.Gowans
C- Sansbury J.Gowans Ohara
HB- Switala Schell Williams
B- Cochrane Sibenaler Hayes
1R- Mckenzie Thomas Callinan
INT(from)- Goodrem Moss Hardy Jenner L.Westhoff Hadden Spurr Mcshane Duncan Brading Henderson

Not including any AFL senior players Symes Griffin M.Westhoff J.Westhoff and Giles.

I agree it looks as though you guys will need an extra tall to make your strong squad a very strong squad. Mainly down back because if Schell gets injured and Sibenaler and Hayes are the only talls down back then you are exposed. I know Havelberg can play either end but from what i have seen he is best suited as a key forward.

The only difference i had in my mock team was Schell at CHF and Hardy at CHB. The reason i did this was from an article in the messenger recentley where Roy Laird was quoted as saying he wanted Schell and Havelberg to play in the same forward line all year.

It would be an interesting exercise for a Central supporter to settle on the 3 interchange players and then estimate the salary for each player in that side to show how the total comes under $360,000.

Oh I'd reckon somewhere between $0 and $5 million nickname.
How're we gonna do that?????

And, all summer we've been hearing bleating that certain clubs lose out to certain other clubs because they are able to offer more money, yet......I read in the 'Tiser that Shane Birss has signed with Westies.

If we're to believe certain supporters of certain clubs, that must mean no other club was interested in Birss, otherwise he would've ended up elsewhere.

So if West sign one player that proves that all the other incidences of being outbid never happened?
Anyway, Birss was not involved in a bidding war, he has a close friend at the club.
