Over the last 5 to 10 years would there be a better credentialled player than Lawry, pull the pin prematurely for Country or lesser rated footy ????

Technical I know, but Tim Weatherald, or even Brant Chambers should he continue on at a lower level.

If your judging it on premierships won than not really unless you include Switala and Cochrane.

My point is that blokes like Weatherald, Cochrane, Switala and to a lesser degree Fisher had virtually run their race at League level. Chambers definitely had another year in him if he desired.

Im talking about players who were still cruising and playing very good Footy like Lawry obviously was and were going to be definite regulars barring injury or unforseen circumstances.

yeah fair call,

Quinno Graham and Adrian Wilson are two others who may fit into your category.

I think Wilson was only 2 years out the AFL system.

Daniel Schell's body was knackered and by his own admission it had been for the last 2 or 3 years - he barely got through the finals series last year, particularly his shoulder and probably shouldn't have played in the GF according to some.

Jason Mackenzie could have gone on again for sure, no issues from an injury point of view, he just got busier with work (is a rep and does a lot of country travel) plus residing in Kapunda meant alot of travel there as well.

Buckets also had a desire to play some footy in the country with his older brother and wanted to do that while the opportunity was still there. I think he is having a run in the same competition as Schell and they will now play against each other.

I think just about all those guys mentioned had only a couple of years left at the most, at a level well below their best. Lawry was one of the premier fullbacks in the comp and improving. And he had several years ahead of him.

Most of the blokes you hear of leaving are fringe players or blokes basically washed up. Hopefully Lawry is one of a select group who leave at their peak rather than part of a mass exodus.

I can see more and more leaving in the next few years. Playing sanfl is very time consuming and full on with not a great financial reward for most. Much easier to train only once or twice a week and be rewarded a decent wage

Lawry under the microscope because he has left to play country footy in SA, however lots of interstate recruits leave to go play country footy back in their home state (ala brad murray winning port's b&f and returning to country vic.)

Agree with Jim05 have stated previously that i think the SANFL will become an Under 23/24's competition besides the highly paid stars of the comp and a few exeptions! Soon as players realise they will not be playing AFL and weigh up all the training etc. i think there will continue to be a lot of player movement.

Heath's main issues are the committment required to his family, now that he has 3 kids under 2, plus the extra workload at C21. He still wants to play for Us but simply can't find the time to train the way Roy expects.

A couple of former Magpies under 18s are out training with Centrals and from what i heard centrals pre season is 5 or 10 times harder.

Suprisingly the AFL dream might help keep these guys in the system a bit longer with the new trend of mature aged recruits, so its not all one ways...
