The SANFL is not owned by the AFL teams, the AFL teams are sub-licensees of the SANFL.
Reasonably, no SANFL team is going to want players they have developed playing against them, or taken away to play in a VFL team.

I'd rather cut the AFL teams loose than let them wreck the SANFL any more.
Forget it Port, you've already done enough damage by triggering the whole AFL thing in SA anyway...
Geez, topsy thinks beenreal is bitter. If he is, he hasn't been holding onto it for 22 years! Move on, FFS, it is 2012....
Who was it who said, "Whoever forgets history is doomed to repeat it."?

I'm not really all that bitter - just not prepared to let it be white-washed away by historical revisionists.
We need to not make a similar mistake, to the detriment of the whole SANFL, now.

Well, from memory ( and don't quote me if I am wrong as I am growing older and the memory is fading ) but I think it was attributed to Spanish-born American philosipher George Santayana, I think he was 1863-1952 or thereabouts. He was mostly known for his theories on aesthetics, morality and spiritual life, not so much SANFL history, however.

Incorrect.

Unbeknownst to many Santanyana came to Adelaide in the early 20s on a lecture tour and was taken to a Norwood game. His liefelong devotion to the Redlegs started then after an admittedly star struck Santanyana was introduced to Wacka Scott in the rooms after the game. It is said he travelled with his 1922 commemorative Premiership letter opener for the rest of his life.

Interesting point, lets say Symes was on the verge of getting delisted from the Crows and he was playing in their reserves in the SANFL and getting BOG in a shit side and not playing SANFL finals.

I reckon that would actually hurt Symes's chances of getting redrafted to another club, he would get much more exposure and credibility if playing for a stand alone SANFL club.

I dont think it would make any difference to interstate clubs who he was playing for in the SANFL

Personally I would love to see a AFL Resrves competition and the State Leagues left alone to play for Premierships. I know there is the thought that it is more cost effective to tie in the surplus AFL players in State League competitions, but honestly with the amount of cash flow the AFL must have at its disposal and the amount that some player payments are surely this is the most logical option.

Where do EPL soccer teams play their fringe players? Do Man City & Man Utd have a Manchester Comp of some sort where their reserves play? And what about the other EPL teams based in London - is their a London comp of sorts where EPL reserves play?

Then they couldn't send teams to Guatemala to promote the game

Really differant situation.
Most EPL clubs have a reserves team that plays in a reserves comp but usually it is full of youth players.
Some clubs like Manchester City and Spurs dont even have a reserves side, if a player is out of favour or not in great form they are usually loaned out to a lower division club or overseas, Manchester City for instance are paying guys millions and they are playing at other clubs. Mostly though a player that is dropped will just miss out on a game. I know Manchester United have guys that sit on the bench most weeks and they may not get subbed on, several guys didnt play a single minute for months on end

Thanks for your info.
So are our AFL players who are out of favour loaned to their SANFL clubs on a weekly basis? Maybe each SANFL club should only be lent 2 AFL listed players each week (1 Port and 1 Crow) and the rest sit in the stands - reduces the AFL impact on SANFL teams to a slightly more level playing field...

Alternatively the AFL could always take the model of the NFL where the team selected is every player available on the list, the named players go on the field and on the bench and the remaining players do warm ups on the oval outside of the stadium and can be subbed into the game at any stage of it and a listed player subbed out.

Adelaide is a stagnant, conservative backwater.
