Found out the peak viewing audience for the GF was approx 170,000

I suspect that would be a higher peak than just about any other telecast on the day with the exception of Bathurst and Seven news.

My cousin is a cameraman for ABC Sport in Adelaide, including SANFL matches.
This week he has been made redundany after about 28 years of service to the organisation.
ABC Adelaide can't afford to pay a full-time staff member to do 2 days of official work (matchdays and set up)
I wonder how they are going to cover the matches if they are 'releasing' their camera staff?

ABC TV wont be covering the TSL by the looks of it...

http://www.themercury.com.au/article/20 ... 1_afl.html

The Mercury wrote:Tasmania has not played the VFL since 1998, when the then TFL defeated the Vics at North Hobart Oval by 35 points under coach Andy Bennett.

Coincidentally, Bennett will be one of the local commentators out of work next season after negotiations broke down between AFL Tasmania and the ABC.

It is understood the ABC asked for almost double the funding, a shorter roster, and for all broadcast games to be at one venue from next season.

It is believed AFL Tasmania paid a little more than $50,000 for the 2011 coverage, but the ABC wanted about $100,000 a season to proceed with the broadcast.

Young said the demands were not possible.

"There was certainly an increase, to what amount I'm not prepared to divulge, and AFL Tasmania wasn't in a position to enter into that commercial arrangement," he said.

"One of the things we liked about the ABC was promoting the competition. However, we couldn't get the product covering the whole of state."

ABC head of TV and sports events Justin Holdforth said negotiations were continuing.

"From our side, we are still in discussions," Holdforth said.

Without getting into specifics, not really an apples-for-apples comparison to the situation in South Australia, as can be seen by the issues of venues, coverage reach etc. Tasmania has state specific issues that don't arise in South Australia.

Update on the Tassie situation:

The ABC reports that AFL Tasmania has pulled out of negotiations with ABC TV over the broadcasting of state league football and is now in talks with Southern Cross.

Means nothing here. Tasmania is just an outer suburb of Melbourne. They have no real football identity separate from the AFL.

WITH 36 days until the first bounce, the ABC is refusing to commit to broadcasting SANFL games.

Despite the backlash from the SANFL and the league's loyal supporters, ABC managing director Mark Scott has told a Senate estimates committee the network had not committed to broadcasting any games this year and still held "serious concerns" about any long-term future coverage.

"We're keen to do the local footy if we can but it's very expensive and we're concerned that the ratings have dropped 30 per cent in the last two years," he said.

Mr Scott said the ABC was weighing up whether coverage of the Paralympics and women's sports, which attract minimal interest from the commercial networks, was a priority ahead of spending "millions of dollars" on coverage of football.

I think a 30% drop in ratings is a misleading indication of interest in the SANFL. I know Auntie only shows one game per week but a great many of those game choices have been ordinary match-ups.

I highly doubt in SA that the AVERAGE has dropped 30%.

Might need to dig up some figures to have a look at.

When the ABC say 'local football' ratings have dropped by 30% in the last two years that probably means all of them combined like SANFL, VFL, WAFL, TFL etc along with local rugby in NSW & QLD.
