When the AFL take over Port, will they want to be subsidising teams in another competition, let alone the associated junior programs?
It's all the SANFL's fault.

A letter from Dave Cavenett, CDFC President, to the supporters & members of The CDFC.

"Dear Member,

As you would be aware, the SANFL and the league clubs ere currently in discussions around the possible inclusion of teams from the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs within the SANFL.

The potential transfer of the AFL licences in the the near future has been the Catalyst for these discussions to take place.

Although these negotiations are, by necessity, happening on a confidential basis, it is important that you know the following.

The league directors including myself and the ceo's including Kris Grant have been working with the SANFL to arrive at four guiding principles which form the basis for all negotiations around this issue.

These guiding principles have been agreed to by all clubs and the SANFL as non negotiable elements and can be summarised as :

1. Integrity: Any change in competition structure must maintain or enhance the integrity of the SANFL competition; 2. Relevance: Any change in competition structure must maintain or enhance the relevance of the SANFL competition as the best state league in Australia;

3: SANFL & SANFL Club Viability: Any change to the competition structure must improve the long term strength and sustainability of the SANFL and SANFL Clubs;

4: Game Development: Any change to the competition structure must enhance the development of the game at all levels across South Australia.

The SANFL Clubs and the SANFL are steadfast in our resolve that the SANFL competition must be protected, it must remain relevant and it must be viable and that game development through the SANFL competition must continue to be of the utmost importance.

We are yet to receive any input or submissions from either the Adelaide Football Club or the Port Adelaide Football Club. That is expected to occur in the next couple of weeks.

This is a complex issue. There are positives and negatives to adding additional teams to our competition, and each of these is being carefully analysed and discussed.

Once negotiations have reached their conclusion, the SA Football Commission will make a recommendation for the SANFL League directors to consider. Nothing can happen without the authority of the league directors.

Contrary to media reports I do not expect any decisions to be made in the near future. There is a lot of water to go under the bridge and a lot of discussion required before any of us are in a position to make an informed decision.

I would like to stress that the Board of the Central District Football Club will make the decision that is in the best interests of our club, our members and our league.

David Cavenett

President."

It will remove that uncertainty about AFL player availability as we currently have and particularly come finals time.

i read that on the NAFC site, and i strongly disagree. just because the league has been compromised before, doesnt mean we should compromise further. the SANFL should be holding al lthe cards here. the power and crows want in to our competition, so they should be the ones doing everything to make us happy.

if we (we as in the SANFL) say that they can only join the reserves and they each have to design a new jumper incorporating pink and purple polkadots, they should be rushing to fulfill our requirements. that is if they want in so bad. if they arent willing to join our competition, under our terms, well then i guess they just dont want it badly enough then. why should we bend over to them when they want to join us?

If anything this is a good reason to encourage both Crows and Power to field reserves teams elsewhere. Remove this issue of players coming back and forward and return some real integrity to the comp. The bullshit we have to endure at finals time each year can go away for good!

There is only one option here. You all know it. You all want it. You can make it happen. The crows and power, if it is so crucial to there success to have a seconds team, they should take their players and piss off to the VFL. Leave our 9 team SANFL as it is. The bye is welcomed by the players, fact, so that is a non issue for the SANFL. We all want the real PAFC to remain an integral part of our comp.so thats not an issue.
The only threat to the SANFL is the AFL, so cut them loose. If a player is drafted to an AFL team then off you go, live the dream, IN THE AFL. No one believes that the AFL is cash strapped to the point that it couldn't run its own seconds comp so what is all this AFL team in the SANFL crap really about. I'll tell you what it is really about. It's about nullifying a threat to the AFL dominance. It's about increasing AFL crowds in the long run.It is about marginalizing the SANFL. MAKE NO MISTAKE, this will happen and it is a legitimate business tactic. That is what businesses do, take over there weaker opponents in there market.

So what can we all do ? Exactly what you are doing now as well as getting proactive. Flood your club CEO, the crows and power and anyone else you can think of [ Club Sponsors, media, etc] with emails, written correspondence, chew the ear of anyone who will listen at the presso,s after the game. Make it happen, only you can. I mean you.

As a side note, I have recently returned from Sydney, where the AFL are spending millions to take on the NRL. They have the premiership club at the SCG. In my short time in Sydney I saw ZERO, NARDA, ZILCH, NOTHING of the AFL. I saw no Aussie Rules goal posts, no posters no advertising on radio or tv, nothing. Speaking to people there, " What, the AFL? Here? Nah mate, couldn't give a rats arse." was the general response. What a waste of money. How long have Sydney Swans been going? How many premierships?
Sort of seems like the old VFL, sorry AFL PTY LTD, are throwing good money after bad. At least here in SA , AFL PTY LTD, will be on a sure thing with there investment

You should be the ones to compromise, not the SANFL.

If you can see how the Magpies League side would be compromising the SANFL then you can see why we don't want you in the League competition if you are to be a Power reserves side.

I've written before, what's the point of having cake if you don't eat it?

You don't think the shunt off to Ethelton was a compromise?

And apparently Sturt having 7-9 AFL players in its League side each week isn't a compromise, that's OK.

wouldn't there be more spots available, because down the road there will be a new team playing? Spots at jnr level won't change (unless port lose their zone). There will be more spots available at eagles just across port road, and more spots at centrals 15mins down the northern expressway.

The proverb actually relates to the fact that if you eat it you cannot have it too, well you kind of can till you shit it out I suppose and then keep it but that wouldn't be much fun.

Using factually inaccurate statements to argue a case helps noone.

If the AFL sides have their own sanfl sides next year it actually provides more opportunities for local youngsters... not less - so long as they redistribute club boundaries.

There would still be the same number of AFL listed players playing, but they wouldnt be spread all over the place, however there would be 10 sides, not 9, meaning an entire other side would need to be found = more opportunities. Even more if the crows filled sides in all grades.

If port was forced to pull it's reserves/18s then there would be less opportunities.

Not if port keep their junior zones and those lads can't play for Centrals etc because they will be zoned to the pafc, and there will be less spots in the Magpies league side as the AFL listed players will have priority

Yep there would be more spots available if Port dont get to keep their zones but remember Ports grand master plan is based on keeping everything as is, thats what i think the article is basing it on.
