Sturt overachieved? In what way? Don't kid yourself, Sturt were just as crappy as every other club except Central.

We won a final. Against the minor premiers, after EVERYBODY wrote us off.
Not to mention a lot of great wins during the year.
Dogs were the stand out team, doesnt mean we didnt have a great season.

Sturt were expected to finish mid table at best by many people. They ended up making a Grand Final and many of their younger players took their footy to another level with the hope of better things to come. On that basis they 'overachieved'
To just lump their performances with South's season for example is just lazy and doesn't really show much football knowledge.

Agreed Ronnie. Remember that AdelaideHawk is a glass-totally-empty sort of guy, especially around finals time.

Semantics.
In amongst all those authoritive exclamation marks all you have really done is shown that you have a different interpretation of the word "great".
You seem to forget that there's a whole bevvy of words to convey feelings far beyond "great", eg "fantastic", "magnificent", "overwhelming", not to mention those words which could describe aspects of said fantastic feeling eg. "iconic", "mercurial", "unparalleled" etc. My point being that with so many words devoted to the different aspects of emotion much more potent than the mere word "great", why limit yourself to using such a word for taking home a flag? Surely that word should be reserved for something just less than a premiership? Perhaps making the grand final after being given minimal hope of doing so?

if any club worries about outside influences and how people outside the club rate their chances then they really arent doing themselves any justice.

or did people within the club have minimal hope of making the GF

Not worried, nor do I know what hopes people within the club held prior to this season given that I don't exactly live down the road from Unley Oval, but I would have thought that one way to measure an overachievement would be in achieving that which others deemed not possible. Surely we wouldn't have gotten as far as we did without self belief? I don't see how you could have begun hunting down that trail, or thought that such a conclusion was possible.
You could perhaps argue that Sturt were fully capable all along and all they did was earn their due, that would be a more plausible argument, but would also fly in the face of the pre season predicition of just about every poster on here.

One of the downsides of a sporting comp organised around a "premiership" is the implication that one club succeeds and all others in teh comp fail.

So were ther 8 failure clubs last year? I don't think so. And even the doggies as the winning club needed someone to play against to claim the flag.

I also don't regard our 06 season as a failure as making the GF was probably an over-acheivment for us that year.

Rather I think that I rate a season as successful if the club can point to notable acheivements - that may be an improvement in their position on the ladder or maybe just resolving some significant issues off-field (ie financial difficulties) which allow it to survive and grow into the future.

But probably the real question (which is almost impossible to answer objectively) is has your club benefited athletes and other individuals in acheiving personal growth and other benefits that they may not have otherwise acheived had the club not existed?
We used to be good :-(

ok then, go through them club by club.
1. Central, Premiers, PASS
2. Sturt, improved on last year's position but financially?
3. Glenelg,?
4. Eagles,?
5. North, improved on last year's position, PASS
6. West, improved on last year's position but lost over $650,000,?
7. Norwood, supposed to be strong finalists, FAIL,
8. Port, slipping down the ladder again, financially buggered, players leaving, FAIL,
9. South, say no more, FAIL.

We should've at least been in the GF, 2009 as bad a result for me as 1990.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
