I honestly though it was a MEDIA mistake this morning when I opened the paper to read that Dogs co-skipper Paul Thomas had copped a 1 game suspension for a rediculous head butting charge. I just thought the journo typed it wrong but then I read the closing statement about the Club being furious about it, so I knew it was FACT...

I don't need to go...

'ridiculous'...

By the way Big Phil, check out the front article on the Bulldog Banter from a week or so ago - there's an error there too...

Hey Footy Fans,

It's back again... Well at least to a small degree, anyway...

I'm not going to bother to "officially" add this latest media stuff up to my ongoing list, though I would just mention it breifly as it gave me a bit of a laugh when I read it for the first time earlier in the week...

My ever reliable mistake ridden "Inside Football" is the offender, once again. In a brief article by well respected journalist, Peter Argent, outlining State coach Darel Hart's decision to add Central's James Gowans to the State Squad, the column itself starts off like this, and I'll qoute:

Central Districts defender James Gowans has been added to the SANFL state side to play Victoria at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night week, May 31...

James Gowans a DEFENDER.... ??? You've got to be kidding right, he's a greedy midfielder who loves to kick goals, he's not a defenders AHole !!

Anyway, stay tuned for next weeks Inside Football edition, no doubt they'll stay true to form and make another blunder somewhere throughout the magazine...

GO U DOGGIES...

Big Phil...

As I'm typing this, I realised there was another mistake in that it states the game is a NIGHT clash. It's not, as it starts at 1.40pm from memory.

Despite myself, I'll have to add one.

In one of the Advertiser football liftouts last week, the reporter had Mark Ricciuto playing for Waikerie against Hahndorf, not Renmark.

Well done Dogwatcher,

I know your stance on this thread of mine, so I appreciate your imput more than usual, thanks mate...

Bloody long way to drive from Waikerie to Handorf for a game of footy, even if you are Mark Rucciuto...

You'd wanna be on some good coin for it, or at least be thrown a Don Bradman for fuel money, probably more actually @ $1.62 p/litre !!??

Pg 111 of today's (friday) Advertiser. The story on the Basketballers.

Chris Anstey 213mm
Luke Schenscher 216mm
Yao Ming 229mm
Jaber Rouzbahani 226mm

Pretty short for basketballers.

I can't believe they made this mistake four times

Can you believe Jimmy - that 10 years ago I made a similar mistake in a newspaper I was working for at the time. And it was picked up by Boti Nagy and reported as a bit of a clanger in his column (causing me some professional anguish).
And you're right - it is a bit of a clanger.
Guess who wrote the article that you are referring to?

Ahhh- thanks for pointing it out to me Jimmy, it provided me with a few laughs.
I might even write a letter to the editor pointing it out

That's a classic Jimmy, well spotted...

Dogwatcher, no doubt you'd take some solace from the fact that the basketball journalstic guru, Boti Nagy made a similar mistake you made 10 years ago causing you the anguish you went through. I'd write that letter to the editor if I were you, otherwise, I will just add to my ever increasing compilation that I might send to the relevant media outlets come the end of the year, highlighting the basic, simple mistakes they made throughout the course of 2008.

You might know this yourself, having the inside knowledge that you do, but when a journo writes a column or article are they the one who is also responsible to find any appropriate pictures and arrange the relevant insets and/or texts to attach to the snap ? The reason I ask this is that a couple of weeks ago I highlighted an error in the Sunday Mail with an article (or player rating) that Chris 'Bones' McDermott wrote. It had a little inset picture of David Mackay but the text underneath said it was Bernie Vince. I know these 2 lads do look similar, along with VanBerlo.

Anyway, a caller on 5AA's Sunday Roast happened to advsie Chris of his little error. He was totally unaware of it but would have had a copy of the Sunday Mail in the studios with him. After no doubt having a peek, he went on to advise the caller that his job is to just do his article, he said he doesn't take care of any of the pictures or identification of the players in them. So does this mean there is just some "work experience" kid copy and pasting pictures from AFL websites of the player they "think" it is ?? Surely there is a bit more editorial proofing before they send them to print ???

Anywya, that said, I'm sure there will be plenty more of these examples to come, so stay tuned...

In my understanding (not having worked in a major/large newspaper) the people who lay everything out on the page are generally responsible for captions/graphics/photos.

They are called sub editors.

Sub editors are usually experienced staff that have worked as journos elsewhere or have been trained in their role.
They are not work experience kids or inexperienced youngsters.

Big Phil, as I've said before though, mistakes do happen in every job.

I can also tell you that once that mistake has been pointed out to the relevant person, they will be deeply embarrassed.

Cheers for clearing that up Dogwatcher, thanks mate...

I know mistakes happen mate, yes, we are all human, I do know this as I make them myslef, suprise, suprise !!?? (But not all that too often I might point out !!)

It just seems that, despite the fact these journo's make these mistakes and get singled out or "emabarrased", it still frustrates me that we see the same old people making the same mistakes over and over again...

The bye is timely given Sturt was well prepared for the trials in March followed by eight weeks of action.

Mentioned on another thread the Sturt/Port crowd in last weeks SM was left on the template from Sturt/West the week before.

Same thing this week - West/South crowd was the same as the West/Central crowd (at least in country edition).

And they have the Eagles on 6 points with a 4-4 record.

Plus many times the country scores are just completely non-sensical.

Big Phil,

CDFC's own Robert Laidlaw dropped a (rare) clanger of his own in his weekly match report for cdfc.com.au. He mentioned Alan Hayes as being one of CD's better players. That should be Andrew hayes.

Fair mistake from a Central man, Alan Hayes played for the Dogs in the 1960s :)

After North's fantastic win on Saturday I went back to a mates to kick on, he had IQ'ed the game... and the caption had Eagles vs Port Adelaide. What a disgrace!

Blame the people who send them in then.
Very hard to read the writing on those score sheets a lot of the time.

Yes, but someone has to type them down. There was a score on the weekend I saw that was 21.2 (138), you can't be 100% certain, but it's more than likely it's 21.12 (138).
