They are grown men, and should be able to motivate themselves to work hard for each other. You don't need to be screamed at by the coach to run harder, attack the ball etc.

You should hear a centrals huddle when they are losing!! They are not quiet and heads down waiting for the tirade from the coach, they are screaming at each other to pull it together!!

I expect a massive Glenelg turn around in energy for a couple of weeks and then they will drop down to the pitiful bunch of dribble they were last weekend.

I liked Mickan, he brought a joke of a team up to league leaders for a few years. They just fell over in the finals because of the weak minded lazy players, playing on their arses looking for frees.

Now Mickan has to live with the indignity of being sacked. Kudos to him, as every week he blamed himself when his team performed poorly. Maybe the players finally believed him when they knew it was their own fault and slackened off.

Right, so you are supportive of Mickan because he presided over a team of "weak minded lazy players, playing on their arses looking for frees". Sounds like a quality coach to me! Meanwhile the reserves were winning premierships....

No doubt the players are ultimately to blame for where the team lies at the moment...

No doubt the players must take some responsibility for the poor finals performances over the last few years...

That said...

Mickan cannot get a free pass based on that... as another poster stated, you can't sack a whole bunch of players mid-season, though sometimes we wish they would. The coach has to cop it because no one else can... Mickan didn't look like the future.

its up to the coach to identify the blokes who have this lazy,un interested, non passionate approach to their game early on in their term and changing their approach or get rid of them.

Unfortunately mark did neither of these.

There wouldn't surely be too many coaches who got fired when their team is in the top 5.

Excellent question.

I think it would be easier to coach an enthusiastic team that puts in their all week in week out, than a team that doesn't run.

Over the last few years I have watched Westies and Port. Often they didn't have the "talent" in the side but always seemed to have a crack.

Glenelg on the other hand currently have talent but lack of commitment, which I personally think is more a team issue than a coach issue.

My opinion only, but I think the players know they could have done better than what was served up to cause a coach to be sacked.

It's been that way for most of the 40 odd years I've followed the club ...

Mickan got them going, but like Jarman couldn't quite get the job done and things tumbled away since then. Rowey IMHO is a terrible midfield coach. He's had some of the best midfielders going around and they've been soundly outcoached regularly IMHO.

I don't think there was any question this current crop had run it's race. Just a question of whether the next group was better off with Mickan or someone else. Not sure how sacking a coach can be handled well, but in the end it was his job to get the players playing well enough to win a premiership. The board decided that wasn't happening. Massie I understand is promising coaching talent, so all might not be lost. The premiership looks so far away it's hard to imagine them winning it this year (but wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen in sport....) but if they can get some confidence, discover some kids then who knows what might be built on for next year.

If players are lacking commitment it is up to the coach to do something about it. It is not as if there were not other options, as I said previously our reserves have been very strong.

Farewell Rubbers. Thanks for the job you did in restoring some pride after a shitful period before you came to the club.

IMO, the club should've honoured your contract, and I hope they can make a decision in regard to what happens if we stay on the same path.....

Thanks Rubbers. For the first time since my early/mid teens I was able to go to a Bays game expecting a win.

Hopefully this doesnt herald a return to the "I hope we are still in it at 3/4 time" days.

Of course you do. You learn that relatively early in your Bays supporting career. 8) :(

the right decision has been made albeit 18 months too late
he shouldve been terminated at the end of 2009
he clearly did a good job turning the club around
from being easybeats to competetive but the 09
final series showed me he was out coached when
it mattered
