So you think they should have left the West Coast vs Gold Coast match before it finished?

Not at all, but if you are putting on a comp than surely it is your obligation to show it live. Foxtel has more than 1 channel or program the game at a differant time

About half have been live. Usually only when the AFL match finishes at 4.30 SA time and then the night match is a 7 or 7.30 start.

There's been some good games in this competition... but mostly poor games in my opinion. NTT have been the main source of interest due to that Rocko player showing some spark. That said, matches seem to have been poorly programmed, matches being moved from one ground to another ad hoc, no real effort to maximise the attendance of local fans. Playing any SANFL team at AAMI is a complete joke, West would have had someone turn up had it been at Richmond. Pretty stupid... certainly backs up the rumour pre-competition that the whole thing was a bit of a farce... still, would have preferred Sturt to have competed in it, might have won a game! :-)

I dont think the WAFC 22 would have beaten many SANFL sides tonight - looked like a seconds squad with a few league regulars. I'd be pretty confident North or Port going the whole distance. Williamstown fielded one of their strongest teams so the SANFL is in pretty good shape.

So really - if Westies were going to play seconds players - what was the point in competing in this comp in the first place?

(Or was the West lineup totally forced due to injury/soreness/etc? Then ignore my post, play on...)

Injuries have forced the clubs hand - I think they still may have played a few kids in tonights game, but in a perfect season, the side would have been a lot stronger if the depth was so tested.

A shame we will lose one of our other SANFL clubs next game as they play each other. It will be interesting to see what strenght sides they pitt against one-another (Port and North that is)

I suppose I can see why the first reaction is to roll out the excuse that West Adelaide were undermanned to explain the loss. Perhaps that is why they were also rolled by Norwood at home last week?

Perhaps it does not sit well with people to accept that an SANFL side just got its colours given a damn good kicking by a superior side and one that happens to play in the VFL? They had to both deal with travel and play away on a ground they have never played on before and still won it well.

Lobbe got a bath in the Ruck, Williamstown controlled the game from there, adding more of Westies supposed rested players would have done little to change the result.

I hope West persist with Motlop for another week - means North will have a one man advantage every time he is on the park! Thanks for the $$$.

Hopefully Armstrong will be lining up for the roosters to make it an even contest!

Even allowing for an error ridden game today by Armstrong - he is twice the player Motlop is so you can keep Marlon who is an imposter as league level..

Sojourner, West aren't making any excuses, they were beaten by a better side on the day. Willy had several players who would have played at Football Park before, West had many who were playing there for the first time.

You say West's "outs' wouldn't have made much difference. If you don't think the inclusion of Silvester at full-back, Ferguson at CHB, Brad Fisher up forward, Willits in the ruck, Birss and Fielke on-ball, Green, Hill and Anderson, replacing 4 first-gamers and one or two regular seconds players wouldn't have made any difference, then I have a challenge for you. I invite you to pick a South side with 6 of their top 10 players out, replace them with 4 first-gamers, post it on here and tell us with a straight face that it doesn't make any difference.

I look forward to your team.

Interesting game. It certainly showed the difference between SANFL and VFL footy. Willy were quick and really moved the ball well from defence to attack in the second quarter, but once West put them under body pressure, they looked a different side. I think West would have got a fair bit out of the game, apart from a dreadful second quarter. Several players found form, with Nat Caruso outstanding, Fort Caruso getting a lot of the footy, Jonno Beech kicking 5 goals (watch this lad - can play) and getting a look at several new and Reserves players at this level.

It was an entertaining game, with a lot of goals in a shortened time span.

It was also interesting that Willy's last goal in the third quarter came from a break from defence with all 18 of their players in the West 50. They also soon after had 2 extra defenders for a short while.

Geez - I can't believe how many people are bagging West re this game?

I'm sure Andy Collins would have wanted to play his strongest side but he couldn't due to injuries or the risk of further injuries to players 50/50 at best. Collins still has duty to ensure his commitment to the SANFL and finals is balanced by participation in this comp?

West did very well considering how many outs they had and they played against a side with16 AFL listed players - half of whom in the past few seasons would have been in the Bulldogs side not playing at the State level.

Thanks for that, otr.

West's side included 3 promising juniors who have each played less than 10 Reserves games (no league games) and 3 players who have played only a handful of league games, so I think it was a pretty good effort.

Whoever plays in this comp will have to strike a selection balance.

Edit: otr, how do you rate Marlon Motlop? ;)
