No disrespect intended to Bass, but I don't think SANFL clubs attract the quality of applicants they did a few years back ... I reckon North found this last year and actively chased Healy, the Eagles possibly found it this year and went after Godden, and it made it near impossible for Norwood to not select Bassett.
The local clubs probably wouldn't say it publicly, but I think it could be the case.

But Laird and Fuller prior to coaching League , had no AFL experience so really whats its worth anyway ! Good old fashion head hunting is always the main way to get your coach , always has been always will be . We got lucky with Paul Hamilton in 2000 via applications , but then got screwed over after 12 months , so Im all for head hunting especially some one with very little likelyhood of a AFL career in coaching .Constance_Perm wrote:GWW wrote:I must say i'm surprised about Bassett being labelled as the favourite for the Norwood job. While this is a little bit of topic - sometimes we wonder why our SANFL coaches don't get an assistants gig at AFL clubs too often if they haven't played in the AFL. Then when SANFL clubs appoint coaches, they are looking for SANFL and preferably some sort of AFL experience, and the fans seem to expect this too. Is any thought ever given to those who might be coaching in Tassie or Qld or the VFL (without any prior AFL playing or experience), and if not, why then would we expect AFL clubs to consider our SANFL coaches (obviously Ricky MacGowan is an exception.
Who would have been the last "no-name" coach to come into SA? Kevin Higgins maybe?

Stevie wright was coaching in Tassie, Cowboy Neale iat Ainslie, Alistair Clarkson not sure VFL. But your post infers AFL experience so you probably mean, playing as well, which the above did AFL/VFL.

Anyway, good luck to Bassett if he gets the gig.
