If CDFC continue thier donimance, maybe for another 2 or 3 years, what's the chances of them being asked to join the AFL as the 3rd SA side?

If this did ever happen, would that spell the end of the SANFL as a real alternative state league.

I only ask because there has been some talk in the past (I'm sure I've read it on here), of a 3rd AFL side in SA, and was it PAFC's total dominence for so many years, that prompted them to apply / or whatever took place, to join the AFL.

CDFC have been the "powerhouse" SANFL side for some time now, they are by all accounts, financially sound, and have a growing fan base with bags of potential growth with the outer suburbs growing by the year (at least that's what I understand).

If this did ever happen, could the SANFL survive in thier present format, or would the other sides just become the top tier of the amateur leagues?

Just wondered

If, and only if a 3rd team was to join the AFL from SA, CDFC would NOT be the next cab off the rank...

Judging by the success of the Power in recent times, ie. finishing low, low crowds, announcing a big loss, mass departures from administrative roles - the AFL would be silly to consider a 3rd side in SA.

If the SANFL had any buy-in on this decision, they would look beyond just the past 10 years, and they would probably also realise that Norwood and/or Sturt would be just as viable.

Yes the Dogs have an emerging community building out North, and yes the Dogs have tonnes of money, but that will all amount to squat if they cannot sustain crowds of 25,000+ at home games, and sustain memberships in the vicinity of 20,000-30,000+. You might argue that the Dogs could do all this...

I'd beg to differ.

I'd also go so far as to say that if a Glenelg, Sturt or Norwood side, or a combined Sturt/Norwood side was to join the AFL, that they would also struggle to achieve these numbers.

The Crows would be likely to lose many supporters too, for those supporters of whichever SANFL club gets the licence.

Then you'd also have other clubs such as North Adelaide and South Adelaide claiming that they have just as much entitlement to join the AFL as any other SANFL club.

The damage a 3rd AFL licence would do to the Crows, the Power and to the SANFL competition and its clubs would be disastrous. This reason alone says it will never happen.

So to answer your question BP...if the SANFL and the AFL were fair dinkum, there isn't a "next cab off the rank".

EXACTLY !!!

I would think that we will NOT see a 3rd SA based AFL club at least in our lifetimes and possibly never.

well there was a prominant Dogs supporter on this site who advocated a 3rd SA AFL side/club/franchise in lieu of the Gold Coast Western Sydney.

For mine I agree with everyone on here two SANFl clubs are plenty. for the sake of the drain on license holder the SANFL I would like to see Port Power be made to broaden its supporte base by dropping the Port and becomeing Northen Adelaide allignign itself with Centrals and the growing northern sububs.

Well I for one wouldn't completely poo poo the idea of Centrals having a Reserves side in the AFL.
