John Wood, one of the great Hawthorn supporters. Had the pleasure of sitting next to the big fella at the MCG one day, a top bloke :)

He's actually more likely to be in SA performing in the latest stage version of The Club. He has the lead role.

Another thing the Advertiser got wrong. In the 'What's your problem' was a question wondering how many premierships South Adelaide had won, then the answer said nothing about South, but Norwood and that Norwood had won 16 premierships since the league started in 1897.
WOOOOO, Premiers 1993, 2006 and 2011!

WFC - P 575 W 160 L 411 D 4 W% 28.17

Hello All,

I know there has been a bit of a dry spell for a while now (which I guess is a good thing meaning they are doing their job right?) but I finally have another couple of additions to my list. We have finally reached double figures people with new 2 new entries in at number 10 and 11. The second one made me laugh and is a beauty !!

My favourite weekly read, INSIDE FOOTBALL has given me the next two inductions to my list. As I have been really busy with work away in Port Lincoln for a little while, I actually caught up on both this weeks and last weeks editions this afternoon and found 1 mistake in each. Here goes nothing :

10. INSIDE FOOTBALL: Vol. 38 No. 10 - Wednesday April 16 2008 Page 32 (VFL Wrap)

This one is probably more for any Richmond fans out there as they are more likely to spot this pretty obvious mistake. Also, just a special mention for The 1980 Tassie Medalist who has accused me of only reporting mistakes that somehow affect my beloved Doggies.

The headline article on this page is about 2007 delisted Richmond utility Brent Hartigan and how is he really keen to have a great year in the VFL with Bendigo Bombers to somehow resurrect his AFL career with a second chance. Good solid article by journo Brent Diamond, but that's were Brent got it wrong with Brent !!? The big colour picture is "supposedly" of the man in question with a nice action shot of him in the yellow NAB Cup jumper. Quite clearly (to me and no doubt Richmond fans) the picture is definitely not Brent Hartigan but is an actual fact deputy vice captain Chris Newman.

Once again, I ask the question as to whether or not it is actually the journalist that writes the story who then searches for a nice photo of the player to put with the article. I would like to think that someone from the establishment that write a quality football newspaper would surely be aware of the players, therefore know what they look like and who they are or are not ?!

Now onto my next addition, number 11 in the list. This one does involve Centrals to a degree (Tassie my friend !!??)

11. INSIDE FOOTBALL: Vol. 38 No. 11 - Wednesday April 24 2008 Page 34 (SANFL Wrap)

There are a couple of headline articles on Norwood's Brett Zorzi and the comeback attempt of Port's Clive Waterhouse. This however, isn't where the media stuff comes from though. Underneath the two articles they have a brief individual team wrap of how each club went last week. Basically touches on the game result, better players, goal kickers and then has a quick mention of the teams next opponent the following week. This is where the stuff occurred on this one.

Obviously Centrals article talked of how we are supposedly lucky and should be nice and fresh for the Anzac Day game against North Adelaide. This is because of the bye this week and that we had a few players with niggly injuries and sore bodies. It goes onto say that the Dogs should crush North this week, even though I disagree and think it will be a tight, tough contest.

Now onto North Adelaide's little summary of their clash with the Maggies. It talked of how they snuck home over Port Adelaide with, once again, a depleted interchange bench due to hammy injuries to key personnel. Now here comes the funny part, which I will quote word for word...

It was a great win considering they lost D.Ward, S.Motlop and D.White early to injury and are very unlikely to play in Friday's Anzac Day match against the Eagles

The Eagles.... What The ??!! I don't remember seeing them play in last years GF ??!! How did Ronnie's boys go on the big day, did they win the flag ??!! (obvious sarcasm !!) Clearly this is wrong as they are playing last years Premier and fellow Grand Finalist in Central Districts, as is the tradition, not bloody second vs third from the year before !!??

Bloody hell, I know it might seem like a simple error through lack of editing but come on, surely they can get a simple fact like the opposing team right. It's especially even more disappointing as it is talking about a great day for our veterans and for footy fans alike. Get it right please fellas, that is a pretty poor effort now, lift your game who ever you are !!??

Any way, will be interesting to see if I can spot another error in next weeks publication, will just have to wait and see. The Adelaide papers have been good the last week or two, but I'm sure it want be too long before I have another one to add to my increasing list !!

Get down to Adelaide Oval (and The Parade later that night) and support our great local comp in seeing what should be two great games of footy. Good luck to your team (except North fans !!)

GO U DOGGIES...

I have noticed one from today's write up for the Sturt v Glenelg game by Zac Milbank

he goes on to say that all 4 grades are top of the ladder which is correct but he also states that they are all undefeated. A quick look to the reserves ladder Zac and you will find that they have lost 1 game, the first one against Norwood.

I have a theory on journalists. They are wrong so often, it's hard to imagine people being so incompetent whilst at the same time maintaining ongoing employment. So therefore I have to deduce that it's a case of "spot the deliberate error" in order to ascertain whether or not people are reading their articles.

Hey Folks,

It's good to see that I'm not the only one out there who questions the professionalism of SOME journalist (not all Dogwatcher, my friend)

Although a tiny little miss print with my next error added to my list, my reasons that you will read afterward will give it justice for it's inclusion.

11. THE ADVERTISER - Saturday April 26 2008: SANFL Review Page 112

I was please to see that the names of the players in the 2 photos were correct this week but it didn't take long for me and a few others on the Centrals forum to spot this pretty obvious error in the Bulldogs v Roosters game review. The little inset box that shown all the match details, best players, goal kickers, crowd number etc is where this media mistake took place.

Look closely at the best players for Centrals. Despite sitting in the grandstand and likely to miss six weeks of football, M.Westhoff was able to find himself in the best players for the league team ? Clearly this was an error and in actual fact should have read L.Westhoff but no doubt Matthew Westhoff would have had a chuckle when he read the paper the next day. I don't reckon his older brother Leigh would have been too happy about that though hoping Matty didn't get any best player incentives !! ?

Now I know you might say it's just a simple typo and because there is 3 of them, a L, J & M Westhoff, it would have been an easy mistake to make. Well fair enough, but it was actually an Advertiser employee in Warren Partland, who was one of the first journos to break the story about young Matthew suffering stress fractures of the foot. Although it was Candice Keller who wrote the stroy you would have thought she'd have known this, having worked closly with Warren, and made sure it was correct before going to print ???

Anyway, it was just a little one, I'm sure there will be some bigger and better ones to come in the weeks ahead. My favourites are the photos with incorrect players name written underneath them. I particularly keep an eye for these ones !!!

Just listening to the RPH Monday Morning Footy Wrap and it seems they need to get some accurate analysts.

The guy (sorry forgot his name) who did the wrap on the North / Centrals game clearly wasn't at the game or had his eyes shut. When asked by the panel who held Callinan to his quietest SANFL game, he coughed and spluttered then named Ivens??? Everyone at the ground knew it was Sporn FFS! Where was Rob Green when you need him?

Then the panel cross to talk about the Eagles / West game and the special comments analyst admits he had a headache and didn't see the game! So what is the point of using him for special post match comments??? Talk about "amateur" hour!

Candice Kellers best players list for North in the 'tiser did not include Alleway but the glaring omission is Sporn??? God knows what game she was at. Perhaps RPH can use her "expert" knowledge???

Drebin,

Yeah, I listened to the show this morning as well - nearly choked on my weetbix when I heard the guy say Ivens was on Callinan all day. I think everyone there was well aware it was Sporn, geez, he wore Callinan like a second skin it was pretty noticeable. Was this guy related to Tanya Mudge??

Well done to Chris K and John N though, who always manage to do a great job irrespective of the incompetence of some of the others on the show.

Sorry to pick on you Zac but you have cocked up agin mate.

It seems that you have misplaced your street directory and Richmond Oval is now located in Milner Street Richmond. This is news to me since I live nearby the oval and my Drivers licence clearly says Milner Road. Looks like I am off to waste 45 mins of my lunch break to inform the Dept of Motor Vehicles of my change of Address.

fair call re John and Chris but they should have got Rob Green to do the comments re the North game because he was boundary riding for RPH on the day!

I'm sorry, but I'm still struggling to comprehend Thommo's 1 game ban, so...

I honestly though it was a MEDIA mistake this morning when I opened the paper to read that Dogs co-skipper Paul Thomas had copped a 1 game suspension for a ridiculous head butting charge. I just thought the journo typed it wrong but then I read the closing statement about the Club being furious about it, so I knew it was FACT...

I don't need to go and start a new topic heading: " I HATE IT WHEN THE SANFL TRIBUNAL GET IT WRONG" but I certainly thought it was deserving of a mention on here, as it is kind of linked...

SANFL, you got it wrong... AS BLOODY ALWAYS !!!

Right, I think I have NOW finally got it ALL off my chest, enough whinging done, move on Big Phella !!!??

GO U DOGGIES... (even without your captain - sorry, couldn't help myself !!)

IT'S BACK.......

I know I still don't have many fans on this topic and admittedly I got off my high horse in regards to this for a few weeks...

BUT...

I purchased my weekly edition of Inside Football today and there was a couple of shockingly blatant examples that simply had to see the revival of this thread. Plus, the missus is a bit of a hoarder of the Advertiser and Sunday Mail and luckily, I found a couple of other errors that, despite being slightly outdated, are now gonna be new additions to my revamped list.

Sorry guys, I'm back in the saddle and I'm not trotting, I've got a full gallop up, look out to all journo's who make future mistakes !!

Just sorting through a few now, will have probably number 12, 13, 14, 15 amd maybe 16, who knows, see what I can find, stay tuned...

Hey Fellow Footy Fans,

I am up watching some of the 20 20 cricket and I want to finish my game reviews tomorrow night, so I told you all it wouldn’t be long before I had a few new additions to my list. I'm sure many thought this thread was probably given up on (some thankfully) but guess what, bad luck,

IT’S BACK…. Here We Go...

12. SUNDAY MAIL: Sunday May 4 2008 - Page 51

Chris McDermott had completed his regular player rating of all the Crows players after their solid win against the Kangaroos a fortnight ago. Off to the right of the player ratings was an action shot of a Crows player in possession of the footy. It is titled: COURAGEOUS: Bernie Vince in action last night. Now that’s all well and good, young Bernie was no doubt in all the action during the game but if you look closely, unfortunately the photo of the player in question is quite clearly NOT Bernie Vince, but is in actual fact fellow youngster and first year player DAVID MACKAY. Now I know these 2 skinny, spikey haired blondies do look a little similar but it’s still no excuse.

Back to this mistake, that even managed to get a bit of radio coverage, albeit for about 30 seconds, that I also heard first hand myself. The topic at hand stemmed from a caller who was commenting on the game and before finishing the call, mentioned to Chris McDermott, who again wrote all of the player reviews, that he, specifically, had got the photo wrong of Bernie Vince and advised him that it was actually David Mackay. Bone went on to not only defend himself, but in turn, partly answer a question I have about who it actually is that is making these very basic mistakes. He advised the caller that he doesn’t pick the photos that go along with his article, his job is to just simply write the column or article. He actually didn’t say specifically who looks for and approves the pictures that go to print but I would imagine it might be the young trainee or clearly someone who doesn’t have much know how. Come on now, some jornos need to pull their finger out and start to get it right.

13. INSIDE FOOTBALL: Vol 38 No. 12 - Wednesday May 7 2008 - Page 26

Unfortunately, my favourite weekly read Inside Football is pretty much guaranteed of giving me another addition to my list of basic media mistakes. There was no exception with this issue as I will explain to you know. It doesn’t have a journalists name attached to it, but about half way through each edition, they give a brief summary of each game as well as supplying the individual player stats from that game. There is always a little action photo from the game as well and this is where we find our latest addition to my list at number 13.

The little action shot is titled WONAEMEIRRI: Looked sharp. It was clearly was a reference to the former Norwood player AUSTIN WONAMOEIRRI who recently found himself promoted to the senior list from the rookie list at Melbourne. The photo in question is in black and white but clearly shows Brisbane’s Simon Black tackling an Aboriginal player from the Melbourne Footy Club. Now, although Aboriginal himself, the picture is clearly of former Port Magpies player and fellow South Aussie, AARON DAVEY. Aussie is clearly much much darker in skin colour than Aaron Davey and thought it would have been pretty obvious that it wasn’t him. Clearly not.

14. THE ADVERTISER: Full Time Liftout - Monday May 12 2008 - Page 52

The back page of the Monday footy liftout, Full Time has is titled ‘The Goss’ and is written by Advertiser journo’s Tom Zed and Candice Keller. There are a few interesting stories, a brief overview of the form from AFL listed players who were involved in the SANFL that weekend and generally a picture to go with the main article on the page. No exception on this day with the photo and article showing fromer Power and Redleg player Roger James. The little inset picture inside the main one shows Jamesy playing in the “legends” game at half time of last weeks Norwood v Port clash on a Friday night at the Parade.

The main picture is where this next addition comes from and it shows Roger pressuring one of the North players with those padded bags. The photo shows as being taken by great photographer Ray Titus but I’m not sure if he is to blame for the error. The little title underneath the picture suggests Roger’s dual identity but incorrectly says he is working Rooster player TARQUIN BROWN. The player in the photo is clearly NOT Tarquin, who is only average height, but is in actual fact 200cm giant QLD recruit DANIEL STEWART. The 2 players don’t even look alike in the face so I’m not too sure who is to blame for the mistake.

15. INSIDE FOOTBALL: Vol 38 No.14 - Wednesday May 14 2008 - Page 34

Once again, it’s unfortunate that this next mistake (well 3 on 1 page !!) comes from my very own favourite footy magazine but one of the 3 mentioned on this page made me laugh so much so that I knew it had to be added to the list. This mistake, as in the past, came from the SANFL dedicated page with the individual team analysis from the weekends games. Doing them in alphabetical order, Centrals get their review first and appropriately it was titled: Good Dogs. It went on to mention our 17 point win over the Eagles and singled out Paul Tomas as being brilliant on the night. It then went on to mention that a particular player continued their good form by kicking 3 goals on the night. In what was news to me, Centrals have now a new recruit that has apparently been in good form this year but I haven’t seen him play. It listed the player in mention as DANIEL HAVELOCK !!?? Who is Daniel Havelock and what number does he wear ??!! Clearly it was meant to be DANIEL HAVELBERG but it did get me thinking that maybe the journo spent the night before at the General Havelockon Hutt Street and was still a little hungover the next morning when submitting the article ???

The other thing that made me laugh, and yes it is clearly only a typo, was the same Central review continued on to mention that the Doggies did well to win despite Chris Gowans not playing due to injury. It went on to say that he will miss the next 7 matches with a MEDICAL ligament problem. Medical, I know it is supposed to read MEDIAL but it made me laugh, any injury at, be it knee, ankle , wrist, shoulder etc is MEDICAL in it’s context isn’t it ??? The other very small mistake, again probably a typo, was at the bottom of an article dedicated to the retirement of Westies player Mark Dragaicevic and after mentioning Lee Treeby had recently been added to the State Squad, it went on to list the State Under 20’s side who will be playing a few games against the Under 18’s ahead of the national carnival. First of all, congatulations to all players who made it (especially my favourite player, Ashley Duncan from Centrals). The other Doggies players who made it, and this is actually where the last mistake was, were Louis Hadden, Chad Obst, Joel Baldwin and Luke Barmby. The simple error was they listed that last player, Luke Barmby, as Luke Barnby. Come on, get it right guys, please…

Like I said at the start, I've decided to put a bit of life back in this post, so to all my field researchers out there, keep up the good work and please keep a sharp eye on our somewhat incompetent media. I’ll be sure to add any new additions as I read them, not a few weeks later…

GO U DOGGIES…
