Round 1 (Easter) Crowds

Postby Squawk » Mon Apr 01, 2013 10:45 pm

Thursday night – two games
Norwood v Port – 7,560 at Coopers Stadium
West v Central – 2,971 at City Mazda Stadium

Good Friday Twilight
South v Glenelg - 4,530 at Hickinbotham Oval

Saturday Afternoon ABC Game
Sturt v Eagles - 3,156 at Envestra Park.

Total: 18,217 (average 4,554)

I think everyone would be happy with these crowds, except for WAFC!
What size crowd does Sturt need at home to break even? I have a feeling it is around 3,000 so that's a good start for them and they should get a good crowd for this week's home game vs Port at the Parade.
South would be very happy with that Crowd, especially being on Good Friday.

"especially being a Good Friday"??
More like "because it was a good Friday"!
I know a heap of people that went who haven't been to a SANFL game in years and probably won't until the next Glenelg game on a Good Friday at Noarlunga.
Hell, I would have even gone if I didn't have something else on!

Highest opening rd crowd since 2007.

3rd highes opening rd since Crows came in (other was 1995)

5,000 higher than Easter weekend last year.

3rd highest crowd at Noarlunga, biggest since 1998.

7,560 at Norwood biggest crowd at a single game since Rd 3 Norwood v Glenelg in 2011

West v Central was almost equal to last years crowd also on the Thursday Night before Easter.

For what it is worth. South say the crowd was around 5600, with all revenue from catering up 70% from last year.

How did they come up with that figure? The only 2 entrances to Noarlunga were manned by SANFL officials with clicker counters. To miss 1,000 people is highly unlikely, surely?

Don't tell Bunton South are avoiding declaring revenue, he'll be onto the ATO quicker than you can say 'Mark Ross'.

Understand that Phil. From what I am told: The que went to the Colonnades roundabout from 40 minutes before game time. The SANFL staff, who were one selling, four checking, made efforts to speed this process up. This MAY have resulted in the under counting. For those of you who are regulars or perhaps trust the judgement of others who are regulars, about 5500 is my guess. I admit that big crowds at HO are not my forte.

It was clearly more than 4500 at Noarlunga...I arrived at halftime during the reserves and I already thought it was a big crowd, and plenty arrived at the start of the league. As Doc mentions the queue to get in was enormous right up to the time of the first bounce; I think the redcoats must have given up counting in the finish..Easily the largest crowd Ive witnessed there and apparently the 3rd largest since league footy began there. I would definitely say there were more than 5000 in attendance....

They don't count kids
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Yep agree with DOC and blueandwhite biggest crowd i've seen at Hicky for many years, much bigger than the corresponding game last year against Sturt. Surely this can be verified by the 70% increase in takings from the same fixture last year. Maybe there is method in the madness not to correctly count crowd numbers to keep A Demitriou and our AFL overlords from attracting their attention thereby their concern for our increased crowd numbers diverting $$$ from their all-powerful comp.

So you missed rd 8 1995 when over 10 000 turned up to the first game at Noarlunga? Looking around on Friday you could see it was nowhere near that.

Good crowd though.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Given the lack of history of these types of crowds at Noarlunga, plus the added difficulty of the cars in the oval, I believe anyone who thinks they can accurately tell the difference between a 4500 and a 5000 Noarlunga crowd is either a genius or an idiot.

Having seen the reconciliation sheets each time the Eagles host a home game I can tell you that there is a kids section which is filled out each time.

To confirm this FYI here are the number of kids that attended (on average) each clubs home games in 2012 as part of the published crowd figures.

CHILDREN
Norwood 689.0
Glenelg 657.2
Central 469.6
Sturt 446.0
Eagles 430.3
West 387.0
North 383.5
South 375.2
Port 363.0

Fascinating. Am I right in thinking that that table is much the same as the table for overall attendances - with the exception of Port being last? Bit of a worry for Port, if true. Today's kids = tomorrow's members.
