West Adelaide 2012

Postby Wedgie » Mon Mar 19, 2012 1:41 pm

Started like a house on fire last year, I actually thought they'd challenge for the flag then fell in a terrible hole when they got some injuries.
A topsy turvy preason with a big loss to Port and a small lost to Sturt with a win over the premiers between the two losses.
Which Westies will we see this year?
Will Andy Collins see out the year if they have a poor one in his 5th year of coaching the Bloods?

I have more chance of beating Black Caviar down the straight at Flemington than West Adelaide has of winning the flag !
Not going to mention the coach though.

Would be a nice academic exercise to start a market on what round the axe will fall...

Theyv'e persisted with him this long so you'd think he'd see out most of the year if Westies falter. Will Mark Mickan make a big difference?
Is Mark or any assistants ready for the step up if required?
Will thses questions be a waste of time as West show similar form to the beginning of last year?

Wasnt going to respond but here goes ....

From where Collins started to where we are now are poles apart. People outside the club have idea of the work he has put in both on and off the ground. Two wins (I think), no money, no players and no spirit in his first year. We are improving and will continue to do so.

I too would like more victories and I think this will be the year. Our lack of depth showed last year when we had many injuries from about round 8 (Caruso, Morris, Fisher etc), we didnt have the players to cover for them. More depth this year I believe so I think we will be better equiped to face injuries. Our best football is as good as anyones, our worst is as bad as it gets. If we get on a roll, our forward line could be one of the most imposing in the league.

F Caruso/A Fielke....Brad Fisher.....Still
Beech........Webb........T Slattery

Our backline with the loss of Stevie Morris and Sylvestor is a concern. Joel Tippet really needs to stand up as does Adam Hartlett. Hartlett can be anything in this competition if he stays injury free and gets his head in the right place. Ferg....well he is Ferg and is a super player and bloke but cannot do it by himself. Another who needs to stay injury free. Rory Laird, Shannon Green, Ben Fisher and Daniel Caire need to be at the top of their games all year.

Midfield will be better this year with Homburg, Schiller and S Ezard a year older and bigger bodies. Schmidt, Birss, Nat Caruso, Jimmy Ezard all need to stay sound as again we have not recruited a ruckman...the complaint of the West faithful for many years. Willets and Nelson will try hard but I cannot see us winning many taps in the centre circle, but do ok around the ground. Brad Crouch will add some grunt and class too but we cannot expect a 17 year old to do it every week.

As we dont have a "love affair" with the men in white so we need to make sure our discipline if first rate...not stupid off the ball indicents and no back chat. First trial game, 37 -9 against, second trial 30 - 15 against. Not saying they were wrong umpiring, just showing we need to improve in this area.

Collins does need to deliver a finals berth this year or its goodbye IMO and hopefully will. Time, injuries and umpires will tell.

I see that there is no mention of Jack Carter...seems he wanted to go to Marion F.C but his clearance was denied?
Not listed as in the squad or as leaving? Whats the go there?

So why did they deny his clearance application?

Not sure why it has been denied, others who have left the club have no problem with clearances.

@ Slots It Through., trained with us over pre-season but hasnt played a trial so not sure whats the go with him.

A side that was hit hard by crucial injuries last year. Silvester, Pettigrew and Morris out will test the resolve of the back line. Great point about treating the umpires and opposition with respect by BROADLACH. No point being the hardest on a losing side consistently.

Can play finals and expect them to do so.

I saw in that AFL/SANFL footy mag that came in The Advertiser on Saturday that Neil Mottram is on West Adelaide's list. The age and height (around 6'10") are roughly the same as the former NBL veteran (and former 36er), when did this happen?

Last I heard about him he was playing basketball in Sweden during the summer and in the local ABL during the winter.

Anyone know if he can actually play footy or is this another Chris Molitor-type experiment by the Bloods?

He started training with the club just before christmas and has played a couple of trials in the reserves.

Yeah, he's now put in for a clearance to a regional club in WA.
