Rd 3 Centrals v West review

Postby Brucetiki » Sat Apr 10, 2010 6:27 pm

Centrals 13.13.91
West 10.4.64

A good, solid win by Centrals today. The first quarter Centrals were already pulling out the party tricks - Eddie's running goal around about 8 Westies players and about 5 bounces and Callinan's goal from the southern end hill the highlight. Interestingly, once Westies fell behind their gameplan was very negative - basically when Centrals had the ball, they just put the mega flood on. The second quarter the momentum contined to build towards us as we raced out to a 5 goal lead.

The third quarter was very tight with Centrals kicking 1 goal to Westies 2. Westies then stepped it up early in the last, kicking 3 goals to bring the margin back to just 8 points. In that, Callinan became the first Centrals player pinged under the new deliberate rushed behind rule (IMO the worst rule ever created, but the free was there). Then for some unknown reason Westies returned to playing negative football. Like the first quarter, there were times where there were 2-3 West players outside our 50. Once the margin was 8 points, while they had the momentum you knew they weren't going to kick another goal. Meanwhile, we slammed home the last 3 goals to end up 27 point winners.

Centrals should have been up by 10 goals at half time. Our kicking for goal was woeful. Still not playing anywhere near our best, but looking a little better with each game.

Despite West getting within 8 points in the last quarter, I thought the scoreboard flattered West. The scoring shots tells the story of the game.

Nevertheless, to walk away losers by 27pts isnt too bad considering the personnel out.

The difference today was the superior skills of the Dogs. They were cleaner, sharper and more damaging with their possessions. Callinan was B.O.G..West was too handball happy, trying to link 4/5 handballs when a kick long into attack would be more damaging. The number of times we turned the ball over and Centrals scored straight away would have been huge.

Finally, and I dont like to single players out, but Fielke MUST improve his disposal and decision making. He burns the ball and will be under pressure to retain his spot, especially with H. Hartlett and likely starter, coupled with Anderson making his way back through the 2s

True. When Westies had the lead cut back to 8 points, Centrals had 8 more scoring shots. 13.13 isn't too bad in the end.

Thanks for the report bruce. I guess when you are missing your best 4 talk defenders your game plan will be somewhat defensive but to get the momentum and then go back to playing defensive is a bit unacceptable. Would have taken 27 points at the start of the day. Looking forward to friday night against Norwood.

You must have been the only one, the crowd was quiet, no Yooooouuuu Dooooooogs chant, I think Centrals was nervous. Didnt realise 3 goals within the first 6 mins of the last quarter isnt alarming to you!

Well it was obvious when West had 4 players outside our 50. If they cleared it, they weren't going to go very far.

This happened last week at Prospect, so it wasn't the first time.

That said, I agree with you that it is a stupid rule.

Maybe its because Im a Westies supporter, but I never thought 8 pts in a football game is a comfortable margin!

That one and the one where you cop a 25m penalty if you touch the opposition player after he's taken a mark or a free kick. There was one where Westies copped a 25m penalty for that and even I thought it was soft.

To be fair Centrals got a couple of them. Soft, yes, but the umps are following the rules set.

There could have been umpteen of those last week at Prospect too, which infuriated/bemused both sets of supporters. But I don't know because none of us could work out what the 25s were given for. Who were your umpires today? Same as last week at Prospect?

Luckily we had Richard Williams today at Unley who is a class act when it comes to officiating.

Reserves Score

West 13.5.83
Centrals 7.8.50

Good effort by the boys considering they were down 4.3 to 1.1

Nice to have a chat with one of the Gowans boys today during the reserves. Our skills let us down big time in the league.
