The ideal number of Eagles home games at Thebarton

Postby eaglehaslanded » Sat Aug 15, 2009 9:53 pm

In lieu of my recent thread and poll regarding Thebarton and Woodville. What would be the ideal number of home games for the Eagles at Thebarton ?

In an ideal world my perfect draw would be 6 Woodville, 3 Thebarton based on 9 home games.

I agree, but because of the costs involved, two is good for me.

The potential outcome of the ground having lights of a standard for SANFL footy likely will influence the outcome as to what it actually decided by the club and the SANFL, if the lights go up then they might as well go the full four matches if the deal on the gate is good enough for the club to make money out of it.

Ultimatley its about what brings the most people and coin into the ground as opposed to which ground it is, the decision needs to be made in the best commercial interest of the club and if they can get 6000+ though on a Friday night, go for it is my suggestion!

There are some who say 0 (not me) so to be fair that should be an poll option.

As one idea if West the Eagles and SAAFL can join forces to gain funding for lights then it would allow greater flexibility to get more Friday night SANFL games at the seasons start and end. I submission that benefits 75+ football clubs should get some AFL & government support.

I think it is fair to say that based on crowds in the last 3 years the "novelty" value of Thebarton has worn off and the hopes that this would bring out old West Torrens supporters in their thousands has now disapated. For the record 1592 were there today.

The best option long term is to play about 2 night games at the venue as you would hope this would certainly bring in a much bigger crowd than a similar day game at Woodville. Chris Davies mentioned on LifeFM at half time today they were working with SAAFL on this possibility.

Pending lights keep it to 1 max 2, enough to honour the Torrens part of our history but if there is no clear crowd benefit and extra cost involved to the Eagles that should be it. Each year the Eagles get 10 home games, 2 clubs coming to visit twice. It is one or both of those two clubs that should be allocated a Thebarton match so they are still seen at Woodville that year as well.

Thing is though Phil, three out of the last four Thebarton matches were against West, West and South. You will get 5000+ against Glenelg or Port Round 1 next year, and if the lights are upgraded, an extra couple of thousand.

Fair point Kyle,

For whatever reason Eagles don't get many early home games. maybe getting Woodville Oval quickly turned around post cricket could be an issue. Thebbe doesn't have that problem.

Whatever
My thought is play 1 of the 10 there each year to recognise that part of our history.
Play an extra one there if there is a definite crowd benefit to be had compared with playing it at Woodville. (ie whether a high drawing opponent early in the season or a night game)

C'mon Phil - it sounds like a bit of the Pecker is coming out of you there. Nostalgia - Thebby is a legitimate part of our clubs history and should be treated as such.

If the Pecker truly dominated it would be 0 at Thebarton. There is also the "Breaker" in me as my gridiron club was based at Thebarton as a training ground for two seasons, we played all our games there for six seasons including our clubs first premiership. For many years it was winter at Woodville, summer at Thebarton, I have very fond memories of both.

I recognise accept and have been voical in my support of the need to have regular games there for many years.

However it should be limited to one a year unless there is a financial or crowd benefit to be had by the Eagles in playing more.

I beleive that is a balanced opinion as it
- allows those that love Thebarton to enjoy at least one game there every year
- ensures the club is not overtley disavantaged by moving games to the venue

End of the day it is an opinion.

That's my thoughts exactly; the lights will make an impact, for sure as well. That's where the SANFL, SAAFL, WWTFC, West Torrens Council, and maybe even the WAFC can come into play there. West could benefit from having a night match at Thebarton once in a while for novelty sake.

There is another option,

Although it would never be disclosed, it would make an interesting proposition for the fee that the Unley Council charge the Sturt FC to be compared with the fee the SAAFL might charge for the hire of the ground for a day. It could be that Sturt could make themselves some money by playing a home game at Thebarton against Woodville-West Torrens, especially if the use of SANFL standard lights was an option.

Well I agree with the first part of your post not the second .
Woodville is home
SANFL should understand this even old WT people like myself get the picture home is woodville .
Unless they want country games then play it at thebbie seeing the facilities are woeful gates will not be opened four or three blue coats and two welsco security guys .A piss poor scoreboard and a piss poor clock. The SANFL will not spend money to make the day perfect why should WWTFC pay for it.personally the money would be better spent by the club on other issues.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH SANFL why bother either the people come to woodville or just watch the afl .The numbers of old WT fans who dont come every week were not there yesterday .
