Which coaching job is more attractive?

Postby matt1 » Wed Aug 12, 2009 4:51 pm

With potential for there to be 4 jobs available at the end of the season, I thought we could put our coaching hats on and pick which one is the most attractive.....

There are certainly cases for each club, with some certainly having a little more upside than others...

I think the Eagles as of right now would be the more attractive job, they have a good list (albeit a lttle AFL player reliant) have a histroy of promoting talented youngsters, have good set ups and facilities off field so would get the nod from me (disregarding the fact I'm an Eagles member ;) )

Norwood also have some very good talent on their list but of course will take into 2010 the restrictions of recruiting from a previous salary cap breach. They would have to be 2nd on my list I think becaus I can see real potential for vast improvement from the Legs in years to come.

Port has some very very talented youngsters and a couple of experienced veterans and are probably not as bad as their current ladder position reflects. I think within the next half a decade, we will see the Maggies progressively get back to where they are used to being, at the top. This makes them my 3rd choice.

Sadly the Panthers come in last because of course we know on field there are very few positives in terms of wins. They do have great new facilities off field and it should be a real 'hub of the South' but sadly 1 win for the year is keeping numbers down. Not sure of the off field stability at Panther land from board level so they bring up the rear* for me.

What represents the criteria? A combination of:

- Full-time vs Part-time
- Location
- Likely Senior list
- Junior Strength
- Recruiting funds
- Wage
- Resources at disposal

Given all of the above, unless tradition plays a part (even though it probably only appeals more to older applicants), then I would suggest it's the Eagles.

Not a huge deal between any of them though I wouldn't have thought, all can make a decent case.

Woodville would at least have a case to suggest that they have the cattle on their list ahead of the other three!

I wonder which of the Eagles three fans it was that invited me to fight him on Saturday? I'm sure you'd all recognise him, about three foot tall, voice like a foghorn, whinges a lot and almost definitely abuses steroids. :D

You might have to broaden your search to more than 3 people Topsy...because I was there, and I know CD, MickyJ (and his son) Big Phil (possibly supporting his adopted side) CCL, MightyEagles and Ferret were there Saturday ..so that was at least 8 of us and doubt it was any of us that wanted to fight you

Back on topic...

Naturally I voted for the Eagles job - think Big Phil summed it up pretty well.

The South job, should it come up would be a good one though IMO...but would require some patience from everyone. The off field facilities seem pretty good down there now, the area is massive and with the right person (who may indeed be the current coach) a good recruiting campaign to get blokes who are there because they want to be successful and arent just in it for the money (not that im saying this is the problem now) surely they could be able to achieve what Westies have and develop some sort of winning culture.
Trust the process.

As always, Ernie was there, too. Same with Ozzie, although he was selling Budgets instead of the raffle.

IMO, as an outsider looking in, in the unlikely eventuality that the South job does become available it would have to be the least attractive job to take unless there is a complete overhaul of the Board and the FOC.

However I will be surprised if there is a change of coach at Noarlunga in 2010 (and I don't mean the SFL club).
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Those areas were the main ones i was reffering to when i said there would need to be some patience, seems to be a constant that arises whenever the club is mentioned.
