naming of grounds...bays get it right

Postby bayman » Mon Jun 22, 2009 10:45 pm

while i don't like the 'name changing' of grounds i understand the commercial value of it & thinking about it i think glenelg (not because it's my club) has got it right by having the name 'glenelg' in the naming

we have 'glideroll stadiam at glenelg'

i think the others should be

coopers stadiam at norwood
city mazda oval at richmond

etc etc

i've had people ask me ''where the hell is (insert sponsored ovals name is) when answered i get ''well why don't they say that then ?''

what do you guys think ?
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Just for the record Noarlunga is Alan Hickinbotham Oval or Hickinbotham Oval ... it is not Hickinbotham Homes Oval and it is NOT a sponsored oval. (Trust me on this one )

He did say they got it right by having Glenelg in the name - the other parts a bit fuzzy!

Sorry Bayman, I'll behave now.

Yep, totally agree ... I still call all the grounds by their real names but having the location/team in there does make it hurt ever so slightly less.

My missus who doesn't really keep up with the SANFL these days (follows the Legs so she's got a very good excuse) doesn't know any of the grounds by the sponsor's name.

Until, Hamra Homes, AAMI, City Mazda etc start paying me to refer to them by their commercial name, then they will remain Elizabeth, Football Park, Richmond etc.

   alberton hasn't had a name change (yet)

eg, if it was 'allan scott oval' it should be 'allan scott oval at alberton' ;)

I've checked every fixture I can find and none refer Glenelg's home ground as being that name.

Possibly 'coz the naming sponsorship changed after the fixtures were printed!

Rest assured it'll always be Glenelg, Norwood, Elizabeth, Noarlunga, etc on SAFooty's home page so people know exactly where the games are.
Considering the fickle nature of some supporters who occasionally go to SANFL games confusion through name changes is backward step which might reap some immediate financial rewards but will cost clubs people through the gate which is more important to the longterm survival of the SANFL.
Ive given up trying o work out what the Dome or Geelongs home ground or Glenelg or Richmond or Elzabeth is these days. Skilled Shell or Napra Homes or Challenging Roller doorsor something?
Muliple name changes is even worse!

SANFL website, cant get more official than that, just says "Gliderol Stadium".
Yes admittedly all the others I find have the old sponsor, (including the one on safooty!) but still dont say "at Glenelg".

Im confused, has the Glenelg Football Club moved or did they make a mistake?
Shouldn't it be Gliderol Stadium @ Glenelg East?
:?
