SQUARE + FAIR SA V WWT ??????????????????????????

Postby mal » Fri Jun 19, 2009 10:03 am

WWT has been able to select Crows players Jared Petrenko and Robbie Shirley to play SA this week.
Both players are available for WWT thru an AFL/SANFL loophole during the AFL split round
Shirley and Petrenko both played against NM last AFL round

A discussion can be held of the validity of the AFL/SANFL Interchange of players
WWT has gained a percieved advantage playing 2 exceptionally good footballers V SA ?
SA on the other hand has now a percieved disadadvantage ?

QUESTION 1
Should SA be afforded the right to select the following players
OTTEN
VAN BERLO
DOUGHTY
MACKAY
These 4 players all played for the Crows last week along side Shirley and Petrenko

QUESTION 2
Should all Crows players be allowed to play for thier respective SANFL clubs this weekend ?

QUESTION 3
Is this another example of the degradition of the SANFL by the AFL

SUMMARY
If I barracked for WWT I would be content
If I barracked for SA I would be peeved
As a nuetral supporter I would have to say SA have been disadvantaged.

It seems ridiculous to me that this is being allowed.

I assume there is some rule based on whether they have played for the SANFL club at all this season, or for a certain number of matches?

Did South Adelaide ask to have their AFL players back?
If not then it's their own fault.

There is no concrete rule, it is ultimately just up to the AFL clubs whether they want them to play or not.

That is it there Ecky if the AFL club wants them to play then they can, if granted by the AFL, in the case of Shirley it is no surprise as he has been with the Eagles all year but i was surprised Petrenko was allowed to come back and play as he has been with the crows most of the year and has only played one game with the eagles????? The fact neither of them were named to play in the 22 against NM would have been a contributing factor i would think.

Exactly. I'm not surprised and think it is fair enough Shirley can play, but am surprised Petrenko can.

If I say my real opinion that I think it stinks then I will clearly be howled down as "sour grapes". I wouldent remotley expect any WWT member to oppose the idea because why would they oppose a move that will help thier side to win vital matches to qualify for the SANFL finals, if the shoe was on the other foot of the other eight SANFL sides I cant see any of those sides complaining about it either.

Ultimatley nothing can be done to change it and people have to live with the fact that the Crows and or the Power can treat the SANFL competition pretty much how they like and advantage or disadavantage any side by whatever is best for their own club, ripping players out of the SANFL to be "emergencys" on the bench and not get a game is probably yet another example.

Still, what I do feel good about is my decision to chuck in the Crows to return to being a member of the Geelong Football Club. Incidences like these reinforce my decision that it was the right thing to do after seeing the open disrespect they show to my SANFL club and I would encourage others to do the same and vote with your feet about the way they treat the SANFL in general.

Spare a thought for the exspearienced Robbie Shirley
Is this sequence of events right ?

WA V EG... played for EG
SA V NW... played for SA seconds for a qtr
AC V NM... played for AC after that qtr for SA reserves
SA V EG ....playing for EG against SA the previous SANFL club he played for !!!

IF he plays for AC next game that will be 5 changes in a row for Robbie
He has had an interesting year so far

Peeved yes!

How far away is Goodwin from returning? Would have been great to see him finding some touch back at south

Also Bobby Carlile missed last week with a virus. Would have thought this weekend would have been a good chance to give him a run.

Think we are reading too much into it.

The way the process works is that the AFL Clubs need to apply to the AFL for their players to play SANFL football this weekend.

It just so happens that for some reason, the two players that the Crows have asked to play (not sure whether this is from prompting by the Eagles or not) are from the Eagles.

Petrenko and Shirley have been on the edges of the Crows team for some time now, and the Crows obviously want them to keep playing. It is interesting why the South fringe players haven't been afforded the same.

Anyway, Eagles fans are happy with the Crows, South fans aren't.

Saying that either team is receiving 'an unfair advantage / disadvantage ' is drawing a long bow IMO.

It's indisputable that one team is receiving an unfair advantage - 2 of their AFL players have been given a dispensation to play for them, none of the other team's AFL players have. Clearly that's an advantage and what's fair about it?

I'm inclined to agree with Nickname ... Certainly if Petrenko and Shirley weren't playing, I would still be selecting the Eagles to win, but it definitely provides them with an advantage to have these two boys available.

Still, it's that old adage of "2 arms and 2 legs", just because a player is AFL listed doesn't necessarily mean he can't be beaten at SANFL level.

Using that logic, the same could be said with each weeks AFL selections - e.g Travelling emergencies etc. Lets not think that anything about this is 'special'. It is a fact of life and happens every week, not just the split round.

Its an interesting move by the Crows in one sense,

Surely they would realise that to play the two lads will give the Eagles an advantage to winning, as it stands I doubt many people would tip the SAFC for the win. Despite being an SAFC member, I will say that even without Petrenko and Shirley playing for the Eagles, the current SAFC list wont get anywhere near the Eagles anyway.

So with the Eagles list now bolstered, what choices does Clay Sampson have in coaching the side? Most likely it will be to make it a physical contest and scrag them at every opportunity possible, South have little to lose for the rest of the year if they cop injuries from attempting to play a more physical style of football. Suppose then Petrenko or Shirley cop an injury, or get reported for retaliating to being baited, its a likely scenario to occur given the way the match will most likely be played. How does that benefit the club in making their players targets?

Is Farmer playing for South this week? That's a nice little bonus for doing nothing but finishing near the bottom of the ladder. It is at least a little evener-upperer for the disgruntled South fans...

A little off topic, but there is a fair chance Shirley will play his 100th league game for the Eagles this year. Yes, he is AFL listed, but he is definitely seen as an Eagles player through and through when playing for us.

But it is special. The rules don't allow it, the Crows had to get permission from the AFL. The travelling emergencies issue is tough but everyone puts up with that equally, it's a by-product of the system. This scenario isn't meant to be a part of the system.

Who's suggesting it's special? There's been quirks with AFL players dropping back to (or being plucked from) the SANFL almost on a weekly basis for many many years now.

Naturally you won't see a problem with it, and it's certainly swings and roundabouts, but you said it didn't provide an advantage and I don't agree .. Happy to agree to disagree.

It's not as though Shirley and Petrenko have been regulars in the AFL in recent weeks. I think Shirley has only played 2 AFL games all year? So are the Eagles really "advantaged" or "bolstered" by getting 2 players that have been part of their regular side over the last 4-6 weeks anyway? If anything, it's more that the Eagles were disadvantaged last week. I also don't think the AFL listed players are targetted on field any more than any other player.

The 4 South players (VB, Otten, Mackay & Doughty) haven't played for South all year and are Crows regulars. You talk like it's 2 Crows regulars that have suddenly been dropped back and allowed to play for the Eagles. If it was Knights and Bock then I'd agree with you and some of the other posters in this thread.

I think this move just says that Shirley and Petrenko are unlikely to be playing for the Crows next week so they've been released to play which I think most of us think is fair enough. Usually we complain that the AFL listed players are held back when they don't need to be.

The interchange system is the best of a bad bunch of alternatives and sometimes it throws up anomolies like this when it's 2 players from one SANFL team. Is it ideal? No.

QUESTION 4
Outs:
If this was a WWT directive :
2 WWT players will miss the 21 man cut on game day to make way for Shirley + Petrenko
Will the players dropped be impressed ?

QUESTION 5
Split round :
IF its a Crows directive to have the 2 players play for WWT to gain match practice/fitness or whatever, then should they be made to play in the seconds ?
Is that a compromise?
