LifeFM Duo-cast -- How many crosses???

Postby PhilH » Sat May 15, 2010 10:30 pm

Ok - The LifeFM DUO-CAST trial technically worked today.

The question is how many crosses should we do in a quarter. (A balance between regular updates and not distracting too much from the main broadcast match).

The DUO-CAST is there for the fans of teams not on radio so I am keen on your opinions.

So put yourselves in the shows of a supporter of a team we are duo-casting ... how many times in a quarter should we do a cross (NB this does not include end of quarter reporters.)

(What am I talking about ? - LifeFM trialled today some phone technology that allowed us to have Phil Aspinall hooked up at Glenelg giving live updates during the quarters to the broadcast game at Unley, it will be used for non-broadcast games through the season.)

I've gone for 4-5 minutes. It's probably the average timescale for posting scores on here anyway and as a geo-challenged I'd be happy with that. Obviously an exception for any spectacular occurrences would be appreciated as well.

Just my opinion but I think more often would be annoying for the supporters and a bit too disruptive to the calling of the game you are covering and any less would frustrate those who don't have coverage.

I went for every 4 - 5 minutes, all supporters would like to get a score update every so often, this gives 6 score checks each term, it adds to the feeling of a saturday at the footy
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

I went for 8-9 minutes but personally I wouldn't mind if you didn't bother at all. I prefer to concentrate on the game being covered. I guess if you did cross over then best to do it when the ball is travelling back to the centre square after a goal has been kicked.

Surely the frequency should be dictated by what stage of the game it is and the closeness or otherwise of the scores. e.g in the first 3 quarters you'd think 4 crosses a quarter would be sufficient, maybe more if there are convenient breaks in the broadcast game. But in the last quarter, if the scores are close or getting close that would warrant more score checks. And conversely, if the broadcast game was tight and the other one wasn't, you could almost do with only 1 or 2 checks. Common sense I'd have thought.

Thanks for the feedback nickname, certainly take your advice on board...

Like most things when brainstorming for ideas and feedback, it's best to put it all out on the table, even the common sense ideas, which BTW we have under control.

Nickname, you are correct, there is a degree of common sense involved especially in the final quarter.

However I believe its important to get a vibe from listeners as to what a general balance should be.

Around the Grounds has always been a passion of mine and it's how I got my Aussie Rules start on radio .... here's why

As background back in the early-mid 1980's as a Woodville supporter I was too young and lived too far away to get to many games. My Dad worked a lot of weekends so I only got to about 5-7 games a year.

For other Saturday's I religiously followed the Peckers / Warriors on radio, but with five games on at the same time and Woodville never in the match of the day every week I was always relying on the old around the ground updates.

So I can understand the angst of today's SANFL supporters who also love their team from afar but struggle to keep updated when they are not directly broadcast (Thankfully this happens a lot less than it used to).

Hopefully the LIFE FM DUO-CAST with a balanced amount of crosses and an element of common sense thrown in will assist.
