Split in LifeFM Commentary Team

Postby PhilH » Fri May 14, 2010 9:42 pm

Starting this week LifeFM is splitting its commentary team to help provide extra coverage of non-radio games.

Whilst commentators John Nankivell and Phil Herden will be at Unley to broadcast South v Sturt, boundary rider Phil Aspinall wil
be at the Bay to "DUO-CAST" the Glenelg v Eagles game.

This week will be a trial (so stay tuned for anything happening) but the equipment required has been purchased, tested and after a few false starts recently is now working.

The logistics is that Phil Aspinall will be linked in live on the phone with the broadcast through the whole afternoon and there will be crosses to him every few minutes during the quarters allowing for the most regular updates possible plus the usual end of quarter reports.

It should be a far superior coverage to the regular practice in recent years of calling someone on a mobile at the end of each quarter.

Should the games be out of alignment and say Glenelg v Eagles a nailbiter whilst Sturt v South a blowout this will even allow some live calling from the Bay, (only if the circumstances make it a better listener experience.)

ALL going to plan this DUO-CAST will continue with the two NON-BROADCAST GAMES coming up, Glenelg v Port in Rd 10 and South v Glenelg in Rd 9. And then through the remainder of the season when a game is not on radio.

Hopefully it all works well tomorrow, if not we'll keep at it until it does, it's what SANFL fans deserve

Cheers
Phil Herden, LifeFM

Nice work PhilH and team. It could be tricky to start with (good idea to do those rehearsals!) but I'm confident the DUO-CAST won't become a plaster cast. ;)

Ive been thinking about this one, initially I didn't like it since the game is being covered on TV as well but I have been on the road on numerous occasions wanting to get a bit more coverage of the TV game on the radio.
As long as 95% of resources/time is still dedicated to the main game most of the time I think it could be a good thing.
Well done for trying something new anyway Phil, you're always thinking of ways to improve various things and are always willing to try things.

It will be an interesting balance to maintain time will tell if we get it right. A lot will depend on what is happening at each match.

Doing any TV / non radio games is a bonus ... it's really intended for the matches where there is NO COVERAGE at all.

ie in Rd 9 there are four games at the same time.
ie Our Duo-Cast is the Non-Broadcast match - South v Glenelg
The TV / non radio game - North v West will get score updates but not much more.

Whilst in some ways it sounds futuristic in many ways its going back to the 1980's when all games were linked up.
Somehow this technique got lost in 1991 when commerical radio dropped the SANFL for AFL footy and community radio with much more limited equipment, resources and finances picked up the pieces.

Used to love that dual coverage in the late 80s.
I remember being at suburban grounds watching Elizabeth play and listening to the SANFL on the radio.
The Booze Brothers jingle is etched on my brain from this time.
Great work PhilH.

This is what I have thought of numerous times when listening to the call, and wondering why it couldn't be done again. I used to love it when they did "around the grounds" just after anyone scored a goal during the main game and you'd hear the commentator live from each of the other grounds give a quick score one after the other. It wasn't just being able to hear the scores, it was also that you'd get the feel for what was happening at each game because the guy reading out the score was actually there, and you'd hear in his voice the relative excitement or boredom and the noise of the crowd going ape or just murmuring depending on what was happening at that particular game.
Well done for bringing a piece of that old system back.

When I read the title of this thread I thought that perhaps you guys had a Yoko Ono in your midst. ;)

Yes, I must admit that when I read this thread for the first time this morning, I thought...

Oh no, what have I done to be dumped from the team !! ;)

We'll see how we go today, should be interesting, I'm looking forward to getting down to the Bay and doing my bit in the duo-cast...

As long as the land-line phone(s) work - have 2 just in case - and the person back at the studios presses the right buttons when needed, I think it will be great and something to really enhance the coverage LifeFM brings to the listeners.

I'm sure it will work out well and be an added feature to the coverage...

Yes, I know

The fella was standing in the way, I was under the pump to get the scores out quickly because I only had 10-15 seconds to do my thing, plus, I did get my education in Elizabeth ;)

Thanks for the feedback though mt79 :D
