In the AFL Toyota are the major sponsoir yet other clubs are sponsored by Ford and Mazda - so remind me whats the issue here?

I can only assume the circumstances are different (e.g. Ford's sponsorship of Geelong would have pre-dated Toyota's sponsorship) and that Toyota's contract is different. And I would assume that a dividend from Toyota doesn't go directly to a club sponsored by a rival motor company, whereas here each club gets a substantial sum from Lion Nathan.
There have also been instances where AFL players have been prevented from wearing boots made by a rival company to a club's sponsor.
But, since you asked, the issue is that this deal puts at risk a large sponsorship of the SANFL and its clubs, if Lion Nathan believe their contract has been breached.

Interestingly the Brisbane Lions got fined something like $250 000 in 2002-3 for 'bringing the game into disrepute' after they (and/or the Gabba) signed a deal with Cadbury Schweppes (Pepsi) because it was a competitor of Coca Cola (which was a 'protected' sponsor). Also, Vodafone have walked away from their AFL sponsorships because the AFL was protecting Telstra.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

North's Coopers Deal is off.

Postby Rooster_cracker » Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:07 pm

North'sCoopers deal is off.

North Adelaide Football Club Beer Agreement

North Adelaide Football Club would like to advise members that we cannot proceed with the
Coopers Brewery Sponsorship for 2010. The reasons are as follows:

* The SANFL and its Clubs were party to an agreement with Lion Nathan which expired on
October 31 2009. North Adelaide Football Club accepts that the SANFL and Lion Nathan agreed to a 12 month extension to the original Beer Agreement Sponsorship ending 31st October 2010.
* At all times Coopers Brewery and Lion Nathan have acted in good faith.

The Club will make no further comment on this matter.
