Speaking to a fellow over the weekend who is involved in recruiting with a club from over the border and he told us that it will be a rarity for a player from SA to get drafted straight from our under 18 comp as they view it as second rate due to the fact so many young kids are pushed into it lowering the standard. They cannot understand why when we had a comp similar to TAC in the under 19's here that we changed for no reason. They think kids like young Howard from Glenelg will be a rarity. Funny how Mr Phillips tried to take the credit. Not very popular over there but I don't know why. This guy also stated when asked about young Panos that no one was interested due to the culture created at the norwood footy club in its junior grades. Said it was non productive - told us to make of that what we wanted but indicated the perceived culture was poor due to the coaching standards that where in place. Seemed a bit harsh as the 16's where ok. Also said we would not get the 20 drafeted next year as predicted and we cannot be happy with nine this year as the so called second footy state. Made some relevant points. Time will tell.

Sounds like a load of cobblers to me. I'll believe no one was interested in Panos when he's not rookie drafted in 2 weeks time. And as for the U19s, the feedback the SANFL got from AFL clubs was that they weren't interested much in the U19s. They felt most of the talent was in the U17s; when a highly talented player outgrew the 17s he tended to bypass the 19s and play Reserves/League.

Don't rookie elevations to the main list count??? Last four years Scott McMahon, Jarrad Petrenko and Nick Salter have been elevated to the main list.

Norwood 8
Sturt 7
South 4

I did the same exercise earlier this year. It's not very easy to do. I came up with the following updated count, from 2000 up to the last draft, including rookies. In brackets is draftees to local clubs Power/Crows.

Westies 22 (6)
Central 19 (7)
WWT 18 (11)
North 18 (3)
Glenelg 17 (4)
Port 17 (4)
Norwood 11 (6)
Sturt 11 (5)
South 4 (1)

It would now be interesting to look at the percentage from each club who have had any career success..

Hey nickname the codswallop the has been is saying is true. There was a guy on the radio on talkback over the weekend discussing the same issue and the main theme was the fact that the 18's comp here is no where near the TAC and never will be. I think he said he was a scout for geelong and he also made the point that whatever you did with kids it was not until they started to develpop at 18 that really counted. How many guns do you see at 14 that don't grow and hence don't get the opportunities. The point he made was under 19 here was closer in standard overall to TAC - simple as that. Unless someone is a boy in a mans body and developed (like trengove) then they simply won't get looked at. Proof is in the pudding so far. We are starting to see that the changes made to our junior comp may not be the fruit that certain individuals state. What may benefit 1-2 individual standout players has effected the rest. Those players would have stood out anyway and been drafted. Interesting subject though. Time will tell.

A question that Wedgie asked on another thread got me thinking over the weekend about the history of SANFL players drafted in the last decade and how the numbers and quality compares. I have been looking at the draft as a whole and of course will not be able to finalise my lists until after the pre-season and rookie drafts in the next couple of weeks. But here is a look at the national draft history of the last decade. Please advise me if there is someone I forgot on the lists, will edit them accordingly.

The best year for draftees was 2004 with 15 players drafted, while the year that saw the SANFL with the least amount of players recruited was 2001 with just 3.

You're putting up a talkback radio caller as truth  Not only that, but he contradicts himself immediately, unless you believe Victorian lads grow more quickly than SA lads.

The list of draftees just posted by Big Phil also blows your theory away, with 2009 seeing almost exactly the average number of draftees taken. I'll be happy to state that 2010 will see more than 9 drafted as well.

I think nickname's 'codswallop' is looking good.

The reason Panos wasnt drafted has nothing to do with Norwood, and everything to do with the fact hes a simple Lead-Mark-Kick forward with questionable athleticism and diversity. Every year theres a KPP whos rated highly pre-draft only for people to scratch their head when said KPP is either drafted really rate, drafted in the rookie draft or not drafted at all. Gourdis, Grundy, Kirkby, Thursfield, Gayfer, Cornelius, White, Sibosado were all rated as possible first round picks pre draft and all slid down the draft order. Gayfer wasnt even drafted at all. None of them have showed why they were originally rated so highly. Then theres the fact that each year Port and Adelaide get linked to local players for no other reason than they are local. Every man and his dog had Panos going to Port at one of their picks. 'They need a forward, hes a local, it fits'. Obviously it didnt fit.

AFL clubs want players that can play in multiple roles, maybe switch from either side of the ground. They want players with great athleticism and great endurance. From all ive heard, Panos isnt that sort of player.

He'll get picked up in the rookie draft, possibly by Port anyway. But his falling has nothing to do with Norwoods 'culture'.

That's really good info BP. Thanks for that.

What it says to me is numbers can change significantly from year to year but there is no evidence that either SA footy is falling in standard compared to other states or that the additional of the Gold Coast will lead to a disasterous loss of players from SA.

In fact given that significant resources have been used to target junior development in Qld and NSW over the past 10+ years the fact that SA is holding up tends to belie the view that SA is slipping behind.
We used to be good :-(
