He spoke very well on the radio tonight.
The lads I know in the under 18 squad speak very highly of him.

Mate, find me a coach anywhere at any level where all the players speak highly of them and I'll give you $1M ... you can't please everybody all the time.
How come when Godds is anounced as the Eagles coach there are congratulations all round but when Basset is announced as Norwood coach and half the comments are negative?
Let's see how the fella goes shall we?

IN MANY ways, the excitement of walking into Norwood Oval never left Nathan Bassett.
Not since the time his mother dressed him in red and blue booties as a baby and took him to the footy.
``There was always that really exciting moment of coming in off The Parade and walking into the ground with the big grandstand behind you,’’ he said.
``And the atmosphere of the crowd, you felt really enclosed.’’
Not even 210 AFL games with the Crows could diminish that feeling and now Bassett arrives at the renamed Coopers Stadium every day as coach of the club he has loved his whole life.
So much so that he found it hard to love the Crows as he did the Redlegs in his playing days.
``It took me a good few years in the AFL system before I could let go of Norwood and say, alright, I’ve got to commit now to a new footy club that I haven’t chosen to play for.’’
As glittering as Bassett’s AFL career was, it almost didn’t happen.
Rookie listed to the Melbourne Demons in 1997, he broke his sternum, was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes and was traded to the Crows without playing a game.
He debuted as a 21-year-old in 1998, going on to play 210 games and became an All Australian defender.
Bassett believes his best quality was his ``ability to learn’’ and that’s what he wants to impart on the Norwood players.
``We’ll have a group of guys aged between 19-22 who wouldn’t have played a lot of senior footy.
``And if they’ve got some positive asset that says to me, you could play SANFL football, then let’s work to give you every possibility.
``We will be a younger Reserves team and we’ll be blooding a lot of young players.’’
Bassett retired from AFL football in 2008 and was appointed Norwood’s academy coach last season.
He would have coached elsewhere but it was almost like the footy gods decided that incumbent Trevor Hill would vacate the hotseat at the time when Bassett was ready for a senior job.
While struck by the romance of coaching Norwood, he knows the reality facing him.
``We know enough about fairytales to know they rarely come true.’’
The club won just seven games this year and was slapped with a hefty fine and recruiting restrictions for breaching the salary cap.
``I don’t think too many coaches get to take over when teams are flying. And if you do, there’s a heap of pressure to continue that.
``We haven’t been particularly competitive for seven years now and I think there’s tremendous possibilities.
``There’s a big footy club waiting to get out.’’
Bassett maintains his ``goal’’ is to play finals though his ``expectation’’ is for the club to improve. Whether one leads to the other remains to be seen.
Pre-season training starts on November 9 and Bassett has promised the footballs will be out from the second session.
``Because that’s what we need to work on to further their football education.’’
He also revealed:
Reserves best-and-fairest Jack Juniper (travelling) and ruckman Kenrick Tyrrell (NT) are leaving the club.
He wants big improvement from Jesse Aish and Andrew Lee.
Club champion and former full back Brett Zorzi would remain in the midfield next year.
Stuart Bown will return to the club.
Veteran Tim Weatherald would play on.
He had not spoken to delisted Power midfielder Nick Lower but would ``love’’ him to remain at Norwood if he isn’t re-drafted to the AFL.
The Redlegs will hold a ``meet the coach’’ night on Thursday, November 19, at Coopers Stadium. Supporters can attend from 5pm to 8pm a barbecue is available.

Roy Laird. Can i take the mill in cash.
Maybe cos Gooden has done an apprenticeship . Not like Bassett who coached a team for just over half a year and then headed O/S.
Just a guess though dedja.

If Nathan and his team can do that then I don't give a damn how popular they are...or not.
