Better achievement - Port in the 50s or Central 2000s

Postby Mr66 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 8:38 pm

Which is the better achievement, Port's 6 in a row or Centrals 8 out of 10?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Can't really compare eras. I wouldn't think there'd be much support for Port on this poll given the general dislike for them.

I voted for central (not because of the dislike for port) because port won most if not all of their flags by less than a kick or close to it, which means those games could have gone either way....where as central have been very much dominant & in every premiership they won they haven't looked like losing throughout the matches......they may end up being the 2nd most successful team in the competition before 2025
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Ports 6 for mine.
Some people may not know that their 2nds won about 5 in a row during the same period.
Thats just ridiculous having such depth over that long in a time when the competition was a bit more even than todays.

I totally agree. I'm sick of how in Cricket how they always compare players to Bradman. Today is a totally different era to when he was playing.

I voted for the usual suspect.

You'll have to keep being sick of the Bradman comparison because, different eras or not, he was nearly twice as good as anyone else who has ever played the game in its history.

As much as I hate to say it, Port in the 1950s were the best team in Australia, not just the SANFL, so easily Port Adelaide. The opposition they defeated to win flags were far stronger than that of Central.

Didn't Melbourne venture over to Adelaide and beat them several times during that era?

Interesting to read most posts in favour of Port but in the poll 71% went for centrals

Agree, not a fair comparision from one era to another, but from a personal point of view, Ports 6 titles have more credence than Centrals 8 mainly because it was an even competition before the AFL came along.

Sides developed thier youth teams and kept them. As long as the AFL are allowed to come in and decimate a clubs youth development you will never have a level playing field to compare.

Port were the only team that were professional in their era, as Central are now.
My impression was that Port were also more "professional" about incapacitating opposition players in a way that couldn't be done today, due to umpiring, and the introduction of the interchange bench instead of just two reserves.
The VFL/AFL were always raping our clubs - Collingwood had 6 Norwood players in their team at one time.
Centrals get my vote on the total numbers and winning margins..

Psyber are you trying to say by thuggery you are right they used to be the Bully boys of the comp but at the same time they also had the best administration remember Bob Mclean, had all the money to buy top players, had the most supporters etc etc other clubs could not compete with this especially the younger clubs Central and Woodville..

I agree with your statement in their era there a lot of other factors as well ie rule changes, video evidence etc imagine if they video evidence in those days some of those thugs would of been banned for life.

The ' decade' debate seems to overlook the 9 premierships Port won in 12 seasons from 1988 to 1999, plus an AFL licence.
