No-one's ever going to say "Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg"

"And now we cross to Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg", "hey I'll catch you Sat at Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg", "this week's big game is North v Glenelg at Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg"

People will say either Glenelg Oval, The Bay or Gliderol Stadium. Those long winded alternatives are only done to try to appease the traditionalists. They know no-one's ever going to actually call it that.

Call it what you want I reckon.

Well, to play the "Devil's Advocate, I'll go into bat for the new names.

We're a website for loyal fans of SANFL football and bemoan the changing face of football that has affected our league adversely. We criticise media and others who don't recognise our comp sufficiently.

We're then scornful of sponsors who support our comp by basically 'donating' large sums of money for the 'privilege' of having a suburban oval carry their name.

I'm grateful that City Mazda sponsors Westies and I'm happy to recognise that.

I'm happy driving an old car, sojourner, but if I was looking for a new one, that's the first place I'd go.

Elizabeth Oval = Ponderosa (how the hell did we get that anyway?)
Glenelg Oval = The Bay
Unley Oval = ?
Prospect Oval = ?
Woodville Oval = Pecker Park??? Was that one?
Norwood Oval = The Parade, Coopers
Richmond Oval = ?
Alberton Oval = Devil's Playground
Noarlunga Oval = Arctic Park

I don't know what other nicknames people use, so fill'em in...

... and I don't mean the derogatory one's like Centrelink Park for Elizabeth, I mean those names we used affectionately for want of a better word.

Forward thinking from our forefathers - it was the name of the place in BONANZA - and our current decade has most certainly been a BONANZA in many ways!

IIRC it was coined by someone in the media when it was the only oval to be truly 'way out North', as opposed to the distances to/from the other 9 or 10.

The Parade has always been CANDLESTICK PARK to me - light a candle (or even a fag*) at the ground during night games and it goes so much brighter! Noarlunga has been coined CARLUNGA in recent times too...

after going to a 40th at Christie Downs earlier this year I've stopped calling it that, it's way to harsh on the people of "Lizbeff", they've got nothing on the southern ferals.
