Long Weekend Round - 19,000 turn up

Postby PhilH » Thu Jun 04, 2009 10:06 pm

Pity it wasn't here but over in Perth.

Looks like the WAFL are on their way back ...... here is their official release.

THE West Australian Football League recorded its best attendance figures for a single round since 1994 when more than 19,000 fans flocked to games over the Foundation Day long weekend, lifting total attendance numbers 30 per cent higher than the same time last season.

A total of 19,420 people went to games at Rushton Park (2006) on Saturday and Monday’s contests at Arena Joondalup (3996), East Fremantle Oval (11,051) and Claremont (2367) to take the 2009 attendance total to 105, 660.

The weekend’s total of 19,240 was the largest for a single round since 21,906 fans attended the 1994 Foundation Day round. The total attendance up until round 10 that year was 135,604, which is also the biggest start to a season in the last 15 years, followed closely by this year’s 10-round total.

WAFL operations manager Clint Roberts said it was great to see attendance numbers continue to grow as the quality of games attracts big crowds to the football.

“We’ve had a sensational start to the season both on and off the field with some very close results and big crowds,” Mr Roberts said.

“More than 19,000 people went to a WAFL game over the Foundation Day long weekend, taking our season total to 30 per cent more than the same time last year.

“I think we can put it down to the quality of the competition and how unpredictable and exciting the close results have been, as well as the great work the clubs have been doing to promote their fixtures,” he said.

that's good for state league footy, i'd suggest with freo & wce struggling a bit along with good footy being played in the wafl & most importantly those garbage ballet` rules in the afl is turning people away & back to the state league football
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

The Foundation Day Derbies are getting bigger each year I reckon. Last year was about 9K between the Freo sides.

Certainly helps having a closer season as well.

This weekend is going to be interesting. Either Peel or Perth can kiss 2009 goodbye.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I heard South Fremantle (top) were up by seven goals early but the Sharks just got over the line. Was actually hoping to catch that game on the live stream, ended up listening to Claremont v Subi instead.

Swans (3rd) vs South Fremantle out at at Bassendean this week deserves a decent turnout.
