2009 SANFL Season Launch

Postby Big Phil » Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:18 pm

Was lucky enough to get an invite to todays Season Launch for the SANFL down at Gliderol Stadium...

Mark Soderstrom MC'd the event and it was a good morning with interviews from captains, coaches, assistants and CEO's...

This years theme is "The Real Deal" and the advertising campaign involves trying to get people and kids "off the couch" and to head along to the SANFL for all the action...

There were relays and clinics for all the kids from Glenelg Primary School next door and the players and media had a bit of a relay involving takcle bags, handballing and kicking...

Was a good morning and certainly gets you all excited about the up coming season of SANFL football...

No better place than the SANFL if you want to get off the couch and see some REAL footy action. Sounds like a good campaign from the honchos at West Lakes. Kids can have a dob during quarter time breaks and get up close to their heroes at the huddles. I can exercise my right arm lifting a can to my mouth. Good for everyone!

Is the SANFL the real deal? Probably the only "real deal" thread we haven't had...

Have to say, I'm looking forward to this year in the SANFL

Very open competition and hopefully NFC might finally be up there.

According to Jimmy World, and this is my opinion only, at the end of the minor round (stick the H&A $hite up yer bum):

Glenelg - Should go better this year, only limited by the revitalised local entertainment that hurt them in the 80's
Norwood - Gearing up - good coach & better player list. Bank - factor later in the year? (Where are AGC when we need them?)
Sturt - Lost a lot of experience - full of college boys who need to come back to SAAFL ;)
Centrals - gotta love 'em. Wish I played in this club with this culture, other than living out there, of course
Woodville Eagles - Mixed news - but always competitive
Port - They're North Haven yeah? Struggling with their identity. Did Fos play/coach Port or Power?
North} Who knows? Will they implode or explode (aka SAJC)?. Have to say Jars did lift them up, now what?
South} Hope they go well but they do compete with the local market
West} Proof that an excellent junior programme bites you on the a$$ by the bigger AFL mofo - nobody hates them, other than Doug

Of course, there is the danger that by August, every club will be broke, and the SANFL will fold, and then we can all get our players back into the SAAFL :D

An appalling piece on the launch appeared on the ABC tonight. Leigh Whicker, who you might think has got a vested interest in promoting the competition, spoke almost exclusively on camera about the 'financial correction' needed at SANFL level, how the competition wasn't competing with the AFL and how spending was out of control at the SANFL clubs. If he'd been the head of the NRL asked to comment on the AFL he couldn't have done a better job of pissing on the product.

Leigh, you are a superannuated hack who deserves to wear a blazer and tie at every Crows function in perpetuity for your myriad sins. Leave the competition in the hands of people who at least can give the public appearance of caring two hoots about it.

Thankfully Kris Grant provided some comic relief by bleating about falling revenues over the last few years. This from a club who, in that time, doubled their pokie machine holding. Gold, Kris, gold.
'People are not stupid. They know when they are being conned. And two reserves teams operating in a League competition will reduce it to a farce, a competition without a soul.'

Maybe the parts where Whicker talked up the competiton are on the cutting room floor?

Maybe he was just saying that publically to appease the AFL?

What isn't a maybeis those comments are ill-timed and poorly judged. AS Topsy said here is the amn that should be talking up the competition and if he has concerns about how the clubs are run they should be expressed behind closed doors not in the public domain.

Crikey if the two SA based AFL clubs were run as stringently and with as much passion as the football departments at the SANFL clubs well they would be perennial finalists.

Two clubs made losses this year as they sacrficed income for redevelopment and business growth (Eagles and Glenelg) another club could've made a profit but decided to retire more debt instead (North). I know for a fact Glenelg incomes streasm are now over and above what we generating in 2007 when we made a $130 profit.

Yes we (Glenelg)might have four assistant coaches (includes reserves coach) but they aren't full time and their time commitment is more than the paltry remuneration they do get.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Crikey Booney, get a sense of humour, he had a light hearted dig at most clubs.
If anyone should be complaining it'd be the good folk of North Haven!

5aa basically concentrated on all negative points when interviewing Whicker. When asked about anyone needing to merge he mentioned that it's up to clubs to decide that sort of thing. The league will help clubs if they decide to merge but wont ask clubs to merge.

The early '90s? It's a shorter list to name the years that Port didn't win the Premiership.
