I am all for women having equal opportunity at taking on sports/jobs/pastimes traditionally seen as being a man's profession. But what about men wanting to take on pursuits that have been seen as traditionally female? Doesn't get mentioned.... why is that?
Start up a thread and lets see if we can can it humming
Media aren't being forced to cover female footy, you might be surprised that females like footy also, they are actually taking players/supporters and interest from other female sports, in a lot of ways the reporting of female footy in the media is simply replacing what was there previously for netball.
Can't agree with you on your point about pressure on the media, specifically one particular far reaching, well run, multi-outlet media monolith which relies on an ever decreasing public expenditure. One has only to tune into their interstate programming dominated 'local' radio station to notice a massive increase in focus on female 'equality' issues, and at times almost fawning passing commentary on the supposed quality of womens' football (mostly AFLW, seemingly bugger all on the SANFL ladies).
Taking the cake was one chap the other night saying how good it was quality wise, and how entertaining it was compared to the men's game. Entertaining? That's a matter of perspective, but, FFS, stop trying to convince us that it's anywhere near the AFL (or the major second tier leagues) in terms of net stamina, speed or skill levels so soon into its inception.
The AFL will be well aware that it social opinion is a big driver on a political level. It does not wish to appear as a non inclusive 'dinosaur' in an ever shrinking electronic world. In addition, more people playing Australian Rules Football from one specific demographic will mean they are less likely to be lost to other sports. It follows that media outlets, particularly those with a direct commercial relationships with the AFL, are going to follow suit.
I'm not saying throwing big bucks at social change is a bad thing if it forces attitudes in the long term. I have a view on that. To draw a parallel, the fact that road statistics and safety attitudes are demonstrably better than they were 50 years ago is testimony to law makers that blew off the tiresome, bogane 'nanny state' tags and tackled the issues head on.
I've known
northerner for a number of years in different roles, and while we haven't always agreed, I'm happy to say (without giving too much away) that he is not speaking entirely from a layman's perspective on some things that he has said.
Regarding netball, I can honestly say that I've watched more on television and live than the football code that the Nine Network flog ad-nauseum in this Aussie Rules state. That said, I've never actually seen a men's netball game or heard much about it. Perhaps I would if I knew more. Maybe, and I'm just putting it out there, this might be the point
northerner was making?
If my (sadly, limited) experience as a middle aged male in female dominated industries is any indicator, I can say with some conviction that male attitudes to women in men's 'traditional domains' are not alone in their need of change. "Equity" is not a one way street.
Maybe I should start up a new thread for that too.
