Round 12 - Glenelg v WWT post game discussion

Postby Spargo » Mon Jul 07, 2014 9:37 am

WWT 15 11 101
Glenelg 8 10 58

Thought Glenelg, barring ten minutes in the third qtr, had a real go all day and deserved to be closer at halftime. I can't recall seeing a younger Bays side run out in a long long time. Our lack of big bodies and a target up forward was the difference today. The Eagles had Wundke, Grocke & Ainger - whilst we could have done with Thorpe, Alleway & Button. Our skills are still deplorable, constantly missing targets resulting in turnover goals. Until this improves, we're not going far. I thought Lonergan, Snook & Bradley were our best.
Surprised to see the crowd was almost 2500. I would say 90% were Glenelg supporters. One of the lowest/quietest opposition support I can remember seeing at The Bay.
Chris Kane will be hoping his snipe on Lachy Earl wasn't caught on camera, it was a gutless act from behind on a player who was about to sit in the dug-out.
Finally (and I emphasise this had no bearing on the outcome) the umpiring was woeful. Glenelg couldn't buy a free forward of centre whereas they were handing them out like lollies down the other end. The second or third free was constantly paid and the first one which was obvious, ignored. Not surprising, the free kick count ended up almost even. But it's where and when you get them and yesterday the eagles got a dream run against us - yet again.

A sad reflection of things at Glenelg when I walked away almost satisfied with a mere 43 point loss.

Or maybe the beers and banter on the hill just drew my attention away from the footy.

I can't comment on the split on the grandstand side of the ground but the outer wing was mainly Eagles fans.

By your reckoning we only had 250 fans in the crowd.

Granted, we don't have a massive supporter base but a 90/10 split?!?

Agreed, outer was very pro eagles and I estimated 2500 at the game so not surprised at the final figure.
As for quiet, was a pretty ugly game with not much to cheer about. Glenelg tried hard but lacked polish and a key forward.
Eagles will have to improve significantly to match Norwood this week in a game which could decide who gets the double chance.
Thought Patty G and von B were very good in defence, McGregor made the most of his chances up forward, Wundke was a good target and Templeton made an encouraging return. Grocke very good as second ruckman. Ainger report should get thrown out. Two players going for the ball, the Glenelg player was especially courageous going back with the flight of the ball.

Glenelg were fairly spirited and if they had some focal points up forward to capitalise on their start to the 2nd term, might have been a different story. Certainly no indication the Eagles have broken out of their form slump and didn't manage to extend their lead at all from half way through the 3rd quarter. Mcgregor was dangerous. Von Bertouch was good. A big test against Norwood this week.

Don't think much will come of Ainger's report given the Glenelg player got up and was ok straight away. Could have been uglier had Ainger not braced himself. A great effort from the Glenelg player.

Halfway through 3rd quarter was about the time the bench was down to 1 after Hall went off with concussion.
Agree re Aingers report, maybe a reprimand at worst.
More frees in a game than i recall all season, having said that think they missed some too, they seem to be too far away.
Like the games of Schwarz and Appleton both grabbing their chance and looked soild.
As for the crowd, seemed to be about 50/50 to me.
Trust the process.

Ainger is free to play for the Eagles this week, against Norwood...

Got a reprimand and will have just 62.5 carry-over points...

Just saw the Ainger report. Fair dinkum, even as a bays fan that was a soft report. He could have absolutely buried him if he wanted to.

agreed. It happened pretty close to me and led to some entertaining banter with some Eagles fans around me, but in the sober light of day I'm glad he didn't get a game for that. If he'd pulled out of the contest he'd be called soft(er ;) ) and he could've destroyed Spriggs if he'd wanted to. Good solid contest. Move on.

Interestingly the umpire saw fit to report him for cleaning Spriggs up after taking the mark but didn't award a 15 or 25 meter penalty. There were some strange decisions all day.
